Boot problems with RPi (just got one as a gift)

My wife recently bought me a Raspberry Pi as a gift. She bought me the whole kit with the board, keyboard, mouse, power supply, HDMI cable, USB hub, enclosure, and the SD card pre-loaded with Debian Linux. I went to hook it all up and I am getting boot-up problems. Sometimes it does not boot up at all (red light on but no signal to HDMI monitor). Other times it tries to boot but gives an almost endless stream of error messages. I have yet to make it to the GUI.

A lot of the messages look like:

ERROR: ld.so: object 'usr/lib/arm-linux-gnucabhf/libcofi_rpi.so' from /etc/ld.so.preload cannot be preloaded: ignored.

INIT: Id "T0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

udcvd[1601]: failed to execute /sbin/modprobe' '/sbin/modprobe -b usb (followed by a bunch of characters) ...' : Permission denied

And so forth. I tried typing in startx to run the graphical user interface, but just got a bunch more error messages.

I suspect that either the board itself, or the pre-loaded SD card, or both are bad. Any ideas on how to proceed?

Take a look at the RasPi Troubleshooting Wiki, especially this topic and this topic.  You may have an iffy power supply or power supply cable -- some of those micro USB cables have thin wires that drop too much voltage.  I've heard of a number of pre-loaded SD cards being bad, so reloading it with a new image might fix it.

Thanks for the advice. I got ahold of Brandon in tech support and he advised me how to reimage the SD card with Raspbian Linux. I did this and the board now boots up properly. The power supply and the board itself are OK - all it needed was the corrupted SD card to be fixed. Thanks again!
