I am new comer in Raspberry-Pi group and I am trying to identify what are the existing expansion boards and which additional features the community still required.
If I understood well, there is official expansion boards and third party ones ...
From the Element14 website, I already found a PiFace Digital to add GPIOs, Push buttons, LEDs and 5V commands, a Gertboard to add GPIOs, Push buttons, 50V/0.5A command, 18V/2A motor control and the autonomy of an 8-bit micro with 10-bit ADC and 12-bit DAC peripherals and a Raspberry Pi Camera Module embedding a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor.
I found this interesting website which give a list of the third party expansion board, which is quite impressive : http://elinux.org/RPi_Expansion_Boards
From your user point of view, what are the features that you are still missing and that could be offered via a new expansion board ?
Just as example, could you be interested in a Low-Power Knode connected in wireless with the Raspberry-Pi for Sensing or Remote-control an home-automation applications ?
We could easily imagine a low-cost two boards solution, based on a low-power wireless connectivity like Zigbee or Bluetooth LP, allowing you simply connecting the radio transceiver board on the Raspberry-Pi to command the Knode board, battery powered embedding the corresponding radio transceiver plus a 32-bit low-power micro with advanced peripherals like the new ARM Cortex-M0+ recently introduced and an expansion connector compatible with Arduino shields to add sensors (Element14 should launch soon a triple sensor module with an accelerometer, a magnetometer and a pressure sensor with altimeter abilities).
