Raspberry pi USB dongle not getting IP address and keeps connecting and reconnecting.

I Bought a raspberry pi model B that came with a usb dongle on amazon. The box says element 14 on it. Im using the GUI interface to connect to wifi but it will connect without a ip address then reconnect and repeat that process. It also says 4 way handshake. I don't think power is the issue as i have tried two different power adapters, and one had a 5 Mah output. Im completely new to the raspberry pi so explain things like i'm five.

  • Many RasPi problems have to do with getting 5V to the board.  Even if you have a good 5V power supply, many Micro USB cables have very thin conductors which give you enough of a voltage drop that TP1 drops below 4.75V.  Your WiFi dongle may be adding enough load that TP1 is dropping below 4.75V.     If you have an external USB hub with its own power supply, try using the WiFi dongle in that hub.  That way it's not affecting RasPi's 5V supply.

     

    The problem could easily be something else, but I recommend checking TP1 first to rule out power problems.
