Cirrus Logic Audio Card working on the Raspberry Pi 2

Hi all!

 

As you might know, Cirrus Logic's main kernel source branch recently switched to 3.18.

My first thought was "Hmm, that means the Cirrus Logic card could finally work on the RPi2..."

I have built a couple of 3.18 kernels for my B+ and RPi2 and I have managed to get both models to produce sound image

 

It's still early days, i.e. there are possibly bugs and glitches to fix, but for those of you who would like to try it out I've made an image file that you can download here:

The file is a 1.3 GB zip. Uncompressed size is 3.1 GB, so it fits comfortably on a 4 GB card.


The image is based on the standard 2015-02-16-raspbian-wheezy image from the Foundation that you flash to a SD card for a fresh install.

I have only added my kernels and set up the configuration files to get the card going.

It should work on the older B model  with a Wolfson Audio Card too, but I haven't tested that yet.

    Hi Ahmed,

    The HDMI output to the DAC in your receivers should be OK. If this does not sound right to you, I can only think of 2 causes.

    1) The receiver is not up to your specs.

    2) Kodi might to translations to the digital stream that does not preserve the full quality of your audio source.

    But I am not an audiophile, I just need good clear sound and an afordable system.

     

    If you like MPD, you can look at volumio, there might be support for the CLAC by now. At least there a a lot of audiophiles there.

    An other quick start would be squeezeplug, but to my knowledge this had no CLAC support up to about 6 weeks ago.

    Anyway I had bought 2 of the CLACs and have plans with the onboard class-d amp and the proper headset driver.

    While volumio did not deliver on the  multi room promise and has a lagging  user interface....,

    Gerrelt showed me the way to slap a squeeze lite client onto a Pi, and use the LMS on a laptop, and have many setup options to fit almost any wish. ( Read his site )

    Now with the the Pi2 power, running the LMS on the Pi itself becomes more resonable, and this is my direction.

     

    The fine kernel work done here by Regnar and others could be picked up to create easy to start sets.

    I am working on a script that builds Gerrelts examples on Regnars initial image and updates it too with the corrected kernel.

    I might present the script later, but currently it is not at beta stage, and I do not want to share the clumbsy code.

    It fits my purpose to remember and document the steps, and brings back a working setup in 7 minutes.

    Thank you for the image file and your great works. It works perfectly for my rspi 2.I have problems on volume control.  Do we have an xterm command to decrease/modify the

    volume coming out from either line out or headphone out??

    I just got this up and running tonight, too.  My hat is off to Regnar for his continued support.

     

    To Ramon's query, the outputs default to quite hot.  I use Mplayer so have the ( and the ) to control volume.  I'll get in there and fix the defaults in Mplayer soon - but not tonight!

    Hi, I followed the building instructions on github and replaced the kernel in Ubuntu https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-15-04-for-raspberry-pi-2/517/101

     

    Now I would like to stream the spdif input directly to my speakers (analog or via USB sound card)

     

    I tried to test spdif capturing with the sh skript, but only got a mute audio file.

    Is it normal that pulseaudio only recognizes the analog output but not the inputs of the cirrus card?

    Hi Some One.

     

    Perhaps stating the obvious, but have you run the 'wolfson' scripts to setup the recording paths?

    SPDIF_record.sh should be in /home/pi if you use the ragnar image.

    The Cirrus logic image contained something similar If I remember correct.

    Edit : OOPS you did use the script , ...sorry

     

    BTW If you would be able to compile the Cirrus Logic patches into a tinycore kernel.... :-) I would love to test it for you.

    A headless player with the CLAC that can not corrupt its card is the next level for me.

    Hello all, especially Ragnar,

     

    so I've tried really hard to get the 3.18.9 kernel on a RPiB+ to work but with no success. Maybe someone can give me a hint.

    A brief summary what I tried:

    • Installed the original CL image (cirrus_audio.zip) according the instruction in "Cirrus Logic Audio Card for B+ and A+ onwards V1.02.pdf" --> OK worked out, I got sound out of the CL card
    • Installed the original 2015-02-16-raspbian-wheezy image --> OK RPiB+ is working fine
    • Nothing else touched except expanding the SD card via raspi-config
    • Installed the patches according to Ragnars description above, edited the config.txt & raspi-blacklist.conf and made sure that the RPiB+ kernel is chosen (kernel=kernel_CL.img)

     

    On reboot the RPi is not coming to an end. You see the green led (of the RPi (not the CL-card)) blinking shortly then de-illuminated and only the red led illuminated permanently, the RPi not reactin, not visible on the ethernet.

    Any ideas what I made wrong?

     

    The reason why I want to have the kernel update procedure working is that I want to install the musicbox package --> this would mean install the musicbox first and then the CL kernel patch afterwards.

    Edit: Myybe something important: I got a warning message after the tar .../kernel_3_18_9_W_CL.tgz command. Something like "finished with failures due to previous errors". Could this give a hint?

    I made a couple of scripts to route sound directly on the Wolfson card. I think they work on the Cirrus card too.

    One of them connects S/PDIF In to Line Out.

    No idea at all, I've never used pulseaudio. Have you tried recording without using pulse?

    Do you have all this in /boot/config.txt ?

    dtparam=spi=on
    dtparam=i2c_arm=on
    dtoverlay=rpi-cirrus-wm5102-overlay

    And you do have the overlay file in place?

    $ ls -l /boot/overlays/rpi-cirrus-wm5102-overlay.dtb
