Project Plans for the Raspberry Pi Sense HAT?

spannerspencer
spannerspencer over 10 years ago

imageI have to say that the Raspberry Pi Sense HAT looks like a very alluring piece of kit. All that delicious motion sensing, for one thing, but my spider-sense is tingling when I look at that 8x8 LED matrix, too.

Right off the top of my head, I'm not sure what I'd like to do with one of these in terms of a specific project (as opposed to just playing with it, which is where my current inclinations are to be found!). So I thought I'd ask if any of you guys have any grand schemes in mind for putting the Sense HAT to good/useful/entertaining/frivolous/evil purpose.

Let's get our motion-sensing inspiration flowing!

Another example of utilizing an Atmel chip to perform the donkey work while having a CPU perform the higher level functionality, and a good example too btw, just in case you think im knocking it, im not image

Getting a hold of one of these and applying Windows 10 IoT to it would be fun image

I should test it and integrate in one of the next Raspberry PI peripheral essentials. Maybe on top of the list.

Peter, as these hardware, I can test them. But you please continue on the W-IoT road that is very interesting and I need of all the time you can spend on it saving my study time ! image

Then to share a though of Jorge Luis Borges, "la vida es un jardín de senderos que se bifurcan" ... By one side the cost of these peripherals is really interesting for the users, always less what I expect and - happy - far away from the Sparkfun or Adafruit cost/quality stndards so it is not difficult to invest in them for testing. By the other side, as Farnell don't sell for less than 50 Euros minimum, I am always obliged to buy in Spain from RS-Online image

Ah, RS, I always known them as "Radio Spares" rather than RS-Components, they have been my other toy shopp since I was 16 years old (Far Far away in a distant Galaxy image )

Unfortunately in Italy these devices was only news from the other side of the world. No way to buy one ... Lol

    Hi Spanner,

It is a very intriguing addition to the RPi.

I could see some interesting user interface experiments using the LED matrix for both display and for light input control.

Could be a fun device to play with.

    Hi Spanner!

Ignoring the sensors for now, I hope someone comes up with a "status" program to use the 8x8 display there. It could display

the status of 64 "things". For example, CPU consumption (e.g. four LEDs could be used for >25%, >50%, >75%, >95%), uptime in days in

binary (e.g.  use 12 LEDs for that), network status (another LED), and so on.

Much like the side of a CM-5 (picture source: illinois.edu):

    image

The use of multiple colors could reduce the number of required LEDs, but it may be more tasteful to have it all one selectable

color, or different intensities of that color.

Eight LEDs could be used to display the last byte of the IP address in binary (it is usually clear that the first three will be

either 192.168.0 or 192.168.1 in the home), or cycle between the four bytes.

Or upon startup, the pi could briefly scroll the acquired IP address, to make things easy for people, if the hat is sensed.
