    Welcome to E14 community.

I suggest you install an operating system (O/S) on the single board computer (SBC) before working with the screen. I make this suggestion to limit the number of variables in play during the build. The Raspberry Pi foundation website has the details to help you install the O/S. With the O/S installed you can follow any number of instructions to get the screen working. I like using the details at Adafruit website.

I recommend with you limited knowledge but strong technical background you start with the Pi keyboard and mouse using a monitor (KVM). The full O/S out of the box gives you a GUI screen to move around with. A comfort factor at this point will give you the confidence to tackle the screen.

You could install the screen and make the whole thing work from the get go with a KVM. If something goes wrong you have limited tools to troubleshoot. If you have a friend that has experience working with Pi's that knowledge helps when trying to make short cuts.

A Pi working out of the box with a Raspbian O/S is a great start. Then adding the touch screen takes it to another level.

    https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/how-to-set-up-and-use-your-brand-new-raspberry-pi/

raspberrypi.org is a great place to start. The link above is an introduction they newly published about how to set up a Raspberry pi. You can also find lots of other useful information about Raspberry Pi  and projects you can do with it there.

    Good luck!

larrynewuser welcome to Element 14 and to your new Raspberry Pi 3. I can understand where you come from since my Dad is in his 80's and struggles with technology as well. If you would like to read digitally, check out this PDF https://www.raspberrypi.org/magpi/issues/beginners-guide/ . It is written by the same folks who manufacture the Pi. If you prefer a nice book form, you can order it from https://store.rpipress.cc/products/the-official-raspberry-pi-beginner-s-guide .

If you fancy a bit of programming, can I suggest:

You can learn more about the book on the Code Club blog, and you’ll also find it in the Raspberry Pi Press store, and in bookstores alongside The Raspberry Pi Beginner’s Guide. You can download the free PDF here, but the print version of the Code Club Book of Scratch is rather special. As well as being stuffed full of amazing Scratch projects to try down at your local Code Club, it also comes with magic glasses that reveal secret hints in some of the guides. It’s spiral bound, so it always lays flat, and there are 24 exclusive Code Club stickers as well! The pictures here don’t really do it justice – it’s a wonderful book, even if I am a bit biased.

This all can be seen at https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-beginners-guide/

    Enjoy the Raspberry Pi 3!

    Clem
