malfunctioning USB port

Hi,

I've just received my first Raspberry pi, a model B with a pre-installed NOOBS.  I installed Raspbian.  I can see that the OS is not the latests and I haven't upgraded yet.

My problem is that when I plug either a mouse or a keyboard into the lower USB slot, the device doesn't work.  Either works when plugged into the upper slot.  I currently have the system running with mouse and keyboard (and wi-fi dongle) plugged into a USB hub, which is plugged into the upper slot on the pi.

This seems like a hardware problem but I thought I should check to see if there's a configuration that I might need to adjust.  Can anybody advise me?

Thanks.

Yes, sure looks as if it is a hardware problem.

Both are connected to the same chip, so there is not the possibility of chip X working chip Y not working due to a software issue.

I suggest you contact the company you bought your raspberry pi from and ask them for advice. ("Hi, I got the raspberry pi, but I have a problem with the bottom USB port (explanation omitted...) I suspect it's a hardware problem. What do you think?")

Thank you for that kind response.

Yes, I'd contacted the vendor and used almost exactly the same language as you suggested.  To the query, "What do you think?", the fellow said, "Why don't you check the forum?  If nobody knows a fix we'll exchange the bad board".

I'm a software guy so, of course, every problem looks like hardware to me :>) I've learned I need to look for all the possibilities (within reason).

I hate to part with this new toy while I get an exchange, but I guess I'll need to do that.  Thanks again.
