What is a good waterproof case for a Raspberry Pi and NoIR PiCam?

dkelley810
dkelley810 over 7 years ago

I have built a birdhouse, with a Raspberry Pi and NoIR in it. But I am having issues with sealing it from the elements.

I had an IR Led light ring that burned out part of circuit. Not sure if it was because of elements.

Also looking to seal up the PiCam for weather.

Thank You for any Answers and Ideas.

First Version of Birdhouse. - Original location for PiCam and IR LED Ring.

Version 2 - Modified PiCam and IR LED ring location.

Those are some really great suggestions! Thank You. That is not my Birdbox Camera project, but gives me some great Ideas. I do want my enclosure to look like a real Birdhouse. Not an enclosure per say like a Surveillance camera. I do not have a camera pointing into the Birdhouse, but want to integrate that someday. My idea was just to see the deer in my backyard. But I see the potential for added cameras.

I would suggest something like a tupperware container.  seal any holes where water can get in, but you still need holes for ventilation... need to put some kind of louvers over them to keep the elements out.  if the LED ring was connected to the +5v of the Pi itself, that would be why some things fried...  looks like 36 LED's and the 5mm LED's typically require 20-30mA each.  so that makes a total power consumption of 720mA to 1080mA.  Just the Pi itself requires 1000mA.  not sure what the camera draws, but I'd recommend a separate power supply for the LED's

Thank you for the Reply. The IR LED light ring is powered by it separate Power supply AC -12V. I have both the power for the Pi and the ring enclosed in a 20oz Pop bottle. So that is enclosed nicely.

I have a ProtoCam board on order from Kickstarter - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/955730101/protocam-raspberry-pi-a-b-camera-module-add-on-boa

    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ud5T0awnTSU/VJ8NpF-w1nI/AAAAAAAAFmk/4EHnadZLeeU/s1600/Bplus_Main.png

So my plan was to have IR LED's powered from the Pi. After thinking, I may still power it from a separate power source.

My other concern is if I need to work on the Raspberry Pi + NoIR PiCAM + IR LED's, I want to be able to bring the whole module into the house. not the Whole birdhouse. Just in case a bird wants to move in. I want to disturb them, the least as possible.

    Thanks for the Ideas!

So my plan was to have IR LED's powered from the Pi

The Pi does not have a suitable supply to handle that.

I did one here using a 500w floodlight housing, which could work if you mount it above.

I used a simple transistor to switch the IR leds.

I'm not sure if birds can see IR, so you may just have a really bright torch shining in ther face.

The other housing I'm experimenting with is this.

I discuss it here.  Mounting 2
