The 7” Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi gives users the ability to create all-in-one, integrated projects such as tablets, infotainment systems and embedded projects. The 800 x 480 display connects via an adapter board which handles power and signal conversion. Only two connections to the Pi are required; power from the Pi’s GPIO port and a ribbon cable that connects to the DSI port present on all Raspberry Pi’s. The display will technically work with the Model A and Model B boards (connecting it to the DSI port on the Pi board), however the mounting holes on the back of the display will only line up with the newer board design (A+, B+, Pi 2 and Pi 3).

How to Install the Matchbox-Keyboard for your Pi

1. Connect a physical keyboard to the Raspberry Pi (or SSH into it if that’s your thing.)

2. Connect to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet.

3. Open the terminal.

4. Type sudo apt-get install matchbox-keyboard

5. Let the program download & install (takes 30s-1min depending on your connection.)

6. Exit the terminal & reboot your Pi.

7. The keyboard can be found by clicking the Menu -> Accessories -> Keyboard.

Operating System Support

In order to be sure you’re running the latest version of Raspbian, connect your Raspberry Pi to the Internet and then open LX Terminal. Type ‘sudo apt-get update’ to download the latest version of the OS. Once that’s complete, type ‘sudo apt-get upgrade’ to apply the download to your Raspberry Pi. That way you’ll have all of the latest drivers and software needed to support the touch screen display.

in the section "Assembling the LCD Panel Interface Board and Pi" there, that may help for comparison purposes just in case you spot anything different there compared to your setup.

I just received my touch-screen display. The display does not come on at all - regardless of how it is powered on based on the instructions above.

How do I go about getting a replacement?

Hi Donald,

I don't think what you're requesting exists, unfortunately. There isn't any documentation explaining those things. The connector you're referring to is a USB connector, however, it won't do what a normal USB interface does.
It is labelled 'Pwr Out' so it will supply a bit of power to other mystery unexplained devices : )
A lot of the 'features' of that board are experimental (just a personal opinion) and could cause frustration more than anything else if used beyond the steps described in this blog post.
It's best to assemble the unit as described in the steps here, and avoid using the extra connections.

Hey folks, where can i find a drawing or an id photo of what the various components on the "adapter board are & do. ?
Specifically I see a female plugin which to my deteriorated 80 year old eyes could be a USB or
maybe one of the SATA style port that some older computers used to run a early HDMI out (say to a remote monitor)?
So, what the hell is it please ?

Hi there and thank you for that perfect HowTo! After following your instructions, everything is running quite fine. I've got just one question concerning display rotation. Here is what I'd like to do...

I have rotated the display to the right (portrait mode) using the screen configuration inside Raspbian. Now my screen is in the right position, but the touchscreen is acting weird, since it seems to remain in landscape mode. Is there a solution to fix that problem? Any help is welcome.

Hi Michael,

Soldering worked for me, some photos are here:

I used epoxy glue for some strain relief on the connections afterward.
It likely invalidates any warranty to solder and glue directly to the board, but that wasn't an issue as far as I was concerned.

I am trying to set up a 7" touchscreen and a digione Signature on the same raspberry pi 4 8 GB. The Allo Digione Signature connects to the 40 pin GPIO connector. The 7" Touchscreen needs to connect to the ground, 5V, (pin 6, and pin 2) of the GPIO. Since the GPIO connector on the top surface of the raspberry pi is occupied by the Digione Signature I am going to try to solder the touchscreen jumper cables to the underside of the raspberry pi. Is this a good idea, or am I trying to overload the raspberry pi? My thought are it should work since these are power and ground connectors.

Not clear what the problem you're experiencing here is or where you're connecting the power. I believe if you're powering the display and the Pi, you plug the power into the display expansion board and not the Raspberry Pi.
