I am continuing to run through existing performance tests in parallel with starting to integrate the elements of my project.
This is the network performance test: UltraZed-EV-RD_Ethernet_Performance_Test
The performance tests use iperf3: https://iperf.fr/ which is a tool for performing network throughput measurements by testing either TCP or UDP throughput. The tests require iperf3 to be running on two network endpoints - a client and a server. The link above provides a prebuilt PetaLinux image that was built using the 2017.4 toolset. The measured performance depends on a number of factors including the hardware capabilities of the client and server and the network interconnect. Running this test will give me a sense of the interface performance in a specific configuration. I'll build this test into my final configuration.
Test setup
- iperf3 client running on UltraZed-EV
- iperf3 server running on Ubuntu 18.04 VM
- connection through 1Gbps Network Switch
The default test configuration is the client as the data source (sender) and transmission using TCP
Start the server on the VM: iperf3 -s
Start the client on the UltraZed-EV with 1Gbps bandwidth and transmit data for 60 seconds: iperf3 --bandwidth 1000M --client 10.0.0.32 --format m --time 60
(somewhat counter-intuitive but the ipaddr is that of the server)

Reasonably symmetric performance as would be expected - 558 Mbps and 549 Mbps. I'm not quite sure what to make of the number of retries - 498 and 165.
The throughput was substantially less than the results from the reference test configuration (856-942 Mbps to server) but that configuration was a direct connection between the UltraZed-EV and a CentOS laptop host. Unfortunately, I don't have a Gigabit Ethernet adapter on a dedicated Linux host that I can use. This configuration (through an Ethernet switch) reflects the setup I would normally use.
It always seems like there are speed bumps during a roadtest.... when I tried to run the UDP test I get close to 100% data loss if I try to run at the 500Mbps data rate that I achieved with TCP.
The results were somewhat unsatisfying so I thought that I should at least try using iperf3 on the Windows 10 host rather than on the VM to see what effects the VM layer might be having.

The bandwidth is slightly better 574 Mbps in both directions, but i this case there were no retries which feels a lot better.
The UDP test was also better (default settings) but it's unclear how this compares to the reference test results
- 58% data loss at 1Gbps with 4% out-of-order from a total of 875855 datagrams throughput 957 Mbps transfer 6.68 GBytes
- 50% data loss at 500Mbps with 3% out-of-order from a total of 457658 datagrams throughput 500 Mbps transfer 3.49 GBytes
The maximum UDP throughput of 957 Mbps is the same as the reference test (958 Mbps) but the reference test did not indicate what the data loss was
For my system I plan to use 4-8 IP cameras with HD (1280x720@25fps) or FHD (1920x1080@25fps). The HD cameras will require about 1.5 Mbps and FHD cameras will require 3.0 Mbps using UDP, so the cameras won't be an issue. I need to think about what other Ethernet traffic I'll be running into the board but more likely than not the rest of my network will be the bottleneck if there are traffic issues.
