Poll: Are You Interested in element14 Offering Reference Design Activities?

A number of our leading suppliers have reference designs using their products, which typically come with schematics and other documentation. Some are already built and some the user would need to build.

The element14 team has discussed how we could use these reference designs in our community programs (i.e., Challenges, roadtests, special projects, quizzes, giveaways, et al.), and even new programs that we would offer to our members for fun, enrichment or practical use.

But we first wanted to gauge your interest in establishing a reference design area on element14. Hence, this poll.

I look at reference designs often and have used boards from the manufacturer on several cases. They are a great way to learn how to use a part and how to do good design.

Maybe some sort of follow-on questionnaire to this one would help identify a viable activity. Suggest a bunch of different reference designs and see which are popular and what members might want to do…

Ultralibrarian is also offering reference designs for power supplies. one issue I've seen with these is that they use only vendors parts which may not have equivalent ones. For most FPGA/MCU projects HDL/FW reference designs are quite helpful.

Maybe some sort of follow-on questionnaire to this one would help identify a viable activity. Suggest a bunch of different reference designs and see which are popular and what members might want to do with them. Reference designs is such a wide scope, it is hard to think of general activities without knowing what specific reference design is in play.

Thanks for this detailed and interesting comment. At first thought, I think complex boards might be beyond an element14 activity. But I'll have to see how it plays out. Thanks for your time and comment.

I agree with your comment, Doug. I think it would take a significant amount of work to take a ref design and build it or use it. I'm still trying to figure out how they could be molded into an activity for the community. But given these comments, it looks like there is interest. Thanks.

Absolutely, learning is a strong motive and there are others like need for a working solution. The hard part is to find enough members who have these motives for a particular reference design, all at the same time.

I like the "appeal of sharing the experience" motive, because I am sure there is member interest in reading content that is shared. Maybe that aspect can be emphasized.
