Heads Up on an Upcoming RoadTest: Ultra96

I wanted to give everyone in the RoadTest group some info on a new development board that will be roadtested in the near future: the Ultra96Tm. This board is a great fit for anyone involve in AI or machine learning applications.

What follows is a brief overview of the Ultra96Tm.

Ultra96Tm is an ARM-based, Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+Tm MPSoC development board based on the Linaro 96Boards specification. The 96Boards’ specifications are open and define a standard board layout for development platforms that can be used by software application, hardware device, kernel, and other system software developers.image

Features include:

  • Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZU3EG A484
  • Micron 2 GB (512M x32) LPDDR4 Memory
  • Delkin 16 GB MicroSD card + adapter
  • Pre-loaded with PetaLinux environment
  • Wi-Fi / Bluetooth
  • Mini DisplayPort (MiniDP or mDP)
  • 1x USB 3.0 Type Micro-B upstream port
  • 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0 Type A downstream ports
  • 40-pin 96Boards Low-speed expansion header
  • 60-pin 96Boards High speed expansion header
  • 85mm x 54mm form factor
  • Linaro 96Boards Consumer Edition compatible

Ultra96 boots from the provided Delkin 16 GB MicroSD card, pre-loaded with PetaLinux. You have the option of connecting to Ultra96 through a Webserver using integrated wireless access point capability or to use the provided PetaLinux desktop environment which can be viewed on the integrated Mini DisplayPort video output.

Ultra96 provides four user-controllable LEDs. Engineers may also interact with the board through the 96Boards-compatible low-speed and high-speed expansion connectors by adding peripheral accessories such as those included in Seed Studio’s Grove Starter Kit for 96Boards.

What do you thinking about roadtesting this board? What would you do with it?

The Ultra96 kit ships with a node-locked, device-locked license voucher for SDSoC. That will get you access to the tool and updates for a year. Avnet is working with Xilinx to create a baseline SDSoC platform…

I think whoever is doing this road test is in for some heavy work. We have seen that with the recent MiniZed board and the Basys3, and this board can do even more. It really is a single-board computer…

This seems to be amazing. Is it coming with license of SDSoC Development Environmen? If the license is available, one can test it with xilinx revision and run for example VGG16 network and compare it with other hardware or make some useful computer vision tasks, like kaggle's competitions or traffic sign detector and a lot more.

The key is to run first the simplest network on it to learn it. I do not know how difficult would be to learn the Xilinx revision. You should know Caffe as well. I guess it should not be difficult if you know tensorflow. Do we have anybody here having experience of using deep learning on FPGA in the community?

I would compare its performance with Intel Movidius Compute Stick on a raspberry pi or a gaming GPU. But first of all, I have to review xilinx revision in more details. Are there any online tutorial available except this??

There are some challenges in this area like this. Hopefully after the challenge, people would open source theirs solutions and you could try it on this board image

Is there any concept of roadtesting in a group?? Or still for such a board there are some people who knows everything for testing it?

I doubt whether it is possible to do deep learning on this board.

AI is mentioned in the video below, but AI is a much broader field than deep-learning, in which case this board should compete with the Nvidia Jetson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nvidia_Jetson ).

Anyway, I would rather like to do some AI or image processing on the Ultra96.

Right. I meant as well just for the inference time. Not learning.

For the moment I am thinking of writing a roadtest application for using the board for image processing in medical applications.

cghaba No. You can download it from here. But it needs SDSoC to use it, according to the same page.

It seems revision is made for a development kit zcu102 which has an FPGA  in the same family as Ultra96's chip but about 4 times larger.
