3D Printer Power Supply Amperage

neildonn
neildonn over 10 years ago

HI folks,

I noticed today (as look may have it) my 3D printer was smoking. image On closer inspection I noticed the power terminal on the RAMPS board was melting and smoking. Don't worry, at this point I quickly unplug from the mains.

The power supply is 220v (I live in the UK) with a 12v and 20A ouput. I'm wondering if the power supply is faulty or the cable from the power supply cannot handle the power/amps.

Any ideas? I have a spare PC power supply will that do if needed?

Cheers,

Neil.

Yes 25A is fine as long as it isn't too big to fit into the terminals.

That's great. Personally I would leave it soldered, it's not something I would really need to disconnect. Brian

    Hi Neil,

To me this sounds like it could be a bad connection on the RAMPS board power terminal as that what was getting hot.  It's important for these high current connections are clean and tight.

If you have a heated bed then they usually take about 10 amps and the hot end another 3 to 4 amps plus add a couple for the steppers, fans and electronics.

Does explain why the cable went hot while printing. I'll purchase another terminal and hopefully that should sort things out.

Just one more question. The power supply is rated 20A so should the output wire be up to 20A only or could I use say a 25A instead?

Just to let you know, I have it working by soldering the wire direct to the board but I have ordered a new terminal block.

Again, thank you for your help.

    Neil-

Sorry I'm a bit late but Brian stated it pretty well.  One thing I have also ran into with 3d printing electronic boards is a lot of the cheaper Chinese made ones have at times burned and smoked as you stated.  Just lower quality parts used.  The typical power supplied for the RAMPS should be 12V >16A (20A optimal) if running a heated bed.  Soldering to the board should not be a problem just wont be easy if have to change something.

    Nate-

Not a problem. In the end I ordered a new terminal block (well five) from ebay UK seller. Works a treat and if this starts to smoke then at least I have another four to go at. Soldering to the board was the better option but like you said a bit of a pain when to change something.
