40pin LVDS LCD Interface on laptops

Hello,

 

I am in the process of designing a prototype which will utilize a ~10" LCD display.

 

I was wondering if someone out here could help me with one part of this: the 40pin LVDS interface that is common on many laptops and netbooks.

 

As I understand it, this interface is common accross many LCDs and laptops but I cant quite figure out what it is!

 

Is it a standard? If so does it have a name? Are there timing diagrams I can look at? Common connectors and pinouts?

 

I've searched around but so far I can't find any mention of it, only "this product has a standard 40 pin....etc etc"

 

Searching for information on this is like trying to nail jelly to a wall, or understand what SOAP is/does!

 

Anyone have experience with this?

    JAE is a supplier to Farnell and there Product Manager has sent me your details. Your right finding the right connection for LVDS can be quite a minefield.

     

    JAE has a great deal of experience within this market and are major suppliers to Compaq, Toshiba, Dell, Fujitsu and are supplying different types of LVDS connections.  In the fist instance I propose you check our website

     

    www.jae.co.uk and then click on products.  Series you need to possible consider is FI-NX this is a 40 pin using FPC or our  FI-J, FI-JH which is Microcoax cable.

    Hello Peter,

     

    Yes I've used JAE connectors for laptop IDE drives before.

     

    What I was having trouble with wasn't the connectors so much as the actual interface.

     

    I have found two interfaces: FPD-Link and OpenLDI (OpenLDI is based on FDP-Link). FDP-Link (Flat Panel Display Link) is apparently used in many laptops to connect the display, but im not sure its what I need since 1. there appears to be some sort of reciever between the LCD 'driver' and the FPD-Link transmitter - maybe FDP-Link is just some interim method to get alot of data through a few cables in the laptop hinge? which brings me on to 2. The term "40 pin LVDS" sounds very specific, FDP-Link does not use 20 data lines, its 5 at most for 24 bit colour:

    I'm pretty sure the connection to which I refer is the same as used on embedded PCs which have LVDS LCD Ports. Apparently these need specific settings in the BIOS for timing purposes but I find it hard to believe that companies would sell LCDs claiming compatability with "90% of laptops" without some sort of standardization.
