Election 2016 - The day after... your thoughts?

Catwell
Catwell over 8 years ago

Four years ago, I wrote a comparison of Obama and Romney - who would be better for the engineering world. The results were pretty clear.

I didn't do that this year, figuring we were done with the stagnation of pre 2008. And in 2012, I thought there was a plan for rapid recovery in the engineering job market. Employment rates are great, improving every day.

We were moving on. The results ended up a lot different than I imagined.

I couldn't do any research on the "plans" of the candidates anyway. So, now it is a wait an tell if we continue the recovery.

What are your thoughts? Are engineers poised for continued growth in the job market, or back to pre-2008 level?

While I'd love to discuss the finer points of the Election outcome, I'm rather busy digging a fallout shelter and stocking up on tinned goods at the moment.

Good point, I guess I am referring to people who establish non-negotiable positions. By definition, everything should be negotiable if you want agreements that benefit both sides. If you adopt an extreme…

Well..... without getting too political, engineers build things, or make plans so other people can build things. image

Without manufacturing, not much call for engineers, so is manufacturing coming back (to the US)?

Not without some pretty serious shakeups in the status quo.

I don't see one man rocking the boat that much.

For Hillary to win the popular vote and lose the election seems to demonstrate that the Trump team gamed the electoral college pretty darn well.  I don't think this was about right versus left so much as change versus stasis.  The parts of the country where Madame Clinton did well, NY, Chi, NE, Mn, Virginia and the West Coast and Colorado are doing very well fiscally.  New Mexico as well, plus it has alotta Hispanics, many of who were ill disposed toward Trump.

    I think the same, Yunus.

in our types of mature democracies, where power swings between parties over time based on people voting,

the influence of politics at power at a particular time is not very impacting.

Real things happening in the world, and the global changes, drive the agenda. Politics follow, I think.

so impact of candidate A or B winning on engineering is no more than ripple, I think.

The stock markets were manic.  For example, the USA Dow Jones dropped 5% overnight after the USA election and has been rebounding significantly.  All emotions.

For everyone who is terribly upset and is not old enough to remember, here is something to consider:  The USA and the world at large survived the Presidency of Richard Nixon, the Watergate scandal, and the Middle East oil embargo (all happened around the same time).  Yes, the world has changed in 40+ years but populism isn't new.

Gotta say, here in the UK I was a bit surprised, then stock in the company I work for (Defence Contractor) climbed from 551 to 612 over the last two days!

Some sectors of Engineering may not suffer, or so it initially appears.

As with the others, I do not like to discuss politics in this forum.

All I can say is that the US election system worked and the will of the people has been made.

It will take time to determine if the change is good or bad, but that is the nature of all changes.  History will judge.

I have great hopes that the US and the world can pull out of its current death spiral of no growth and resume a positive advancement to the benefit of all.

That said, change is coming, it is up for each country to decide how it wants to respond.  If positive, all can benefit, if not, then we know where obtuse positions result.

    Just my opinion,

    DAB

Due to the unusual nature of the election system, the candidate with the highest number of votes did not win! image

Oh well, it is what it is.
