Damage detection of roads using piezo sensors

I'm working on a project called damage detection in roads using piezoelectric sensor....i need some help and guidance regarding this....

an accelerometer is a way to go if you want something that will give accelerations in 3 dimensions, as your wheel is not moving in one plane, even though that's what it looks like. this is very result oriented, maybe a camera which scans the road, and maybe some LIDAR sensors as well.
