Good morning folks.
Thanks to the good guidance and kind direction of participants in my previous post, I made the decision to go for a DE0-Nano as my unit of induction into FPGA developement; 2 days later my package arrived. (Thank you Farnell)
I'm very impressed with the device and have had a run through a handful of examples. I am almost confident that I am getting accustomed to the toolchain, (I've got a handle on the "what's" but still figuring out the "why's" but that will come in time, I'm sure.
Now, the literature included with the board referred to Quartus II and offered a link to the downloads page relating to the board. Once there, it was Quartus Prime that was offered. "No problem" I thought, "things have obviously been updated since this package was put together". However, after several unsuccessful attempts to run DE0 Nano control panel, I searched for Quartus II, removed Prime and installed II. Problem solved, tests and examples underway.
That's the background, here's the question:
Is it just that DE0 Nano control panel is not compatible with Prime, or is it something more than that? It seems to me that it would be advantageous to familiarise myself with the most current tools, however, if this could cause unexpected results or missing dependecies/libraries (semantics, I know) It may well be prudent to continue with II until I have a good grasp of the concepts and understanding of associated errors.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
All the best.
