How much hands-on FPGA practice is actually needed before applying for entry-level roles?

I’ve been looking at how students usually learn FPGA design, and there seems to be a big difference between understanding Verilog/SystemVerilog concepts and being able to work confidently on an actual board.

For example, writing RTL is one thing, but working with constraints, clocks, synthesis, implementation, debugging, and verifying behavior on hardware feels like a different level of learning.

For students targeting FPGA or digital design roles, what kind of practical experience do you think is enough before applying?

Would a few well-structured projects on a real FPGA board be more useful than doing many simulation-only exercises?

Also curious to know which skills beginners usually struggle with the most: RTL coding, testbenches, timing constraints, interfacing peripherals, or hardware debugging?

It really depends upon the individual student.

I have seen some students pick up the ideas and quickly progress after just one project.

For others, you can have them run a hundred projects and they just do not really understand what they are doing.

Spot on from DAB. For entry-level roles, quality beats quantity 1 or 2 solid hardware projects where you actually deal with timing constraints and use an integrated logic analyzer  to debug real hardware behavior go much further than 10 clean simulations.

Yes, the importance of an integrated logic analyzer cannot be overstated.  Thumbsup

Yes, getting the RTL Design to infer the resources on the FPGA is the key factor, it differs from vendor to vendor and also with the family of FPGA's selected.

Most of the issues in the design would only show up after the Synthesis and Implementation(AMD)/Fitting(Altera) stages so, it's better to deploy the design on the FPGA.

Setting timing constraints for the design, it kinda makes or breaks the whole design and often ignored.
