Write The Future with Xilinx

Premier Farnell now stocking Xilinx All Programmable Devicesimage

Along with all the new developments and content in the FPGA group, we are excited to announce another development: our new partnership with Xilinx, a leader supplier of programmable logic devices.

In the element14 community, we try to avoid getting pulled into marketing drives and advertising campaigns. We prefer to focus on how this new partnership will benefit our community members now and in the future. So, let me overview some things we feel are important to pass onto you.

What is an FPGA?

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are blank canvas devices that can quickly be configured by using software development tools and libraries to produce a processor that can act however is needed without having to create a custom silicon chip.  The key benefits of using an FPGA over a microprocessor are performance, flexibility, re-programmability and rapid prototyping, which ultimately provides a reduced time to market.

Integrating multiple functions in a single device offers a reduced Bill of Materials, which provides savings in both purchasing and manufacturing costs. And most importantly, these flexible devices are field-upgradable, allowing engineers to carry out upgrades to systems that have been already deployed, as opposed to replacement of silicon and embedded chips onsite, which often is  expensive and in some situations a nearly impossible task.

Great question. I have not heard anything yet. I know who to ask. So, I'll try to get back with you on this.

Is there any element14 brand boards on the roster somewhere in the future? I would love to see small and cheap starter kits with the Element14 brand logo that maybe uses some end-of-the-line devices that can be used in design challenges.
