  • I voted for "Combination of the above", but it's mainly for performance and flexibility.

    Exactly why you might use an FPGA depends on the design - on custom test equipment it's usually for flexibility and the ability to add unexpected functionality later.

    On a production design for volume manufacture it is more likely to be for performance or because there is no other way.
