I know very little about LIDAR but would be very interested to learn more and to perhaps be able to build and experiment with it on my own projects. A few years ago I was fascinated reading an article that had used LIDAR to map an area of jungle, penetrating the foliage to image the ground below....that research showed that a lost city sprawled out across a vast area. Whilst perhaps I'll never be flying a drone or aircraft to do the same I'd be interested to know more about the mechanisms required to mechanically move a laser, how the miniscule returns are detected, I assume there is noise in the return so that would be removed and how the timing information is extracted (especially as much of the time of flight is for a period that is not of interest i.e. aircraft to top of tree canopy).

Before the E14 community start spinning old DVD lasers and feeding data to their FPGA board, perhaps an article on ensuring eye safe designs would be useful !

+1 to Using FPGAs for Environmental Mapping LIDAR!
As already good number of workshops were conducted on FPGAs and their applications, LiDAR mapping would be really a nice addon to follow up with. (I don't know the method/complexity of LiDAR processing though :/ )
