How deep is the market adoption of smart cities technology where you live?

We hear a lot of roll out of new products and technologies for smart city solutions. But what about the actual deployment and implementation of these smart city technologies? How deep is the adoption of these solutions in the cities and countries where you live? Examples would be welcome.

In Chicago we have bus and train tracks via a smart phone. They are decent overall, but sometimes they are just non-functional. I know the City of Chicago has a Smart Cities Initiative team. They say…

Which highlights another common issue. When an unexpected incident occurs, such as a main road closure due to a road traffic accident, then you ideally want the 'smart' technology to provide new information more-or-less immediately so as to be able to inform people as to the alternative arrangements now in place. In a lot of cases they can end up being a rather expensive replacement for a printed timetable.

    Oh yeah, https://data.gov.uk/dataset/15be9dba-392c-4375-a931-425e35b956f7/nextbuses-api ?

Would you believe the UK government had a Microsoft Teams meeting a few weeks ago with the people wanting to use the more open API to see what they could do to make it better? I didn't make the meeting as it was during my work hours but I found it fascinating they had such an open consultation about it.

In Boston Massachusetts, a program called "smart streets" is using cameras and sensors to learn more on how people navigate and interact with the city streets. The focus is on roadway safety. Taking traffic patterns and pedestrian and cyclist movement through intersections..

There is a short paper relating to Smart Cities in the UK linked from this web site which may be of interest:

    https://post.parliament.uk/research-briefings/post-pn-0656/

It cites projects taking place in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Hull, Manchester, Milton Keynes, London and Peterborough.

I recall the Open University running a MOOC on Smart Cities a while back with a few case studies.

Also has cropped up in some TV science documentaries, I recall Dr. Hannah Fry (Professor in the Mathematics of Cities, UCL) covering some of the Bristol Smart City project in one of her programmes 'The Joy of Data' toward the end.

Is it comparable with this: Counting Traffic for the Community - Telraam?

Next year I get my free bus pass so I hope to start using buses and then I will find out how smart they are. I might even plan a few longer journeys just to see how far I can get for nothing. Currently I walk, drive or increasing get other people to take me to places. Or I stay at home.

A limiting factor may be that I get bus sick (and car sick if I'm not driving) but I Iive in hope I'll be able to manage.

but that probably doesn't count as smart cities tech maybe

I think it's the very core of smart cities. This is where it's happening in bulk.

I believe quite a few cities have adopted and rolled out smart bins. A prevalent one here is the "bigbelly" brand of smart bins. There are quite a few other companies that do similar.

Three years ago I had the opportunity to present a recycling bin project that gave prizes for recycling through QR codes and that also allowed remote monitoring of the container for the Sensing the World Design Challenge. The project was awarded and I showed it to a person from the company in charge of recycling plastics and bottles in Spain, who found it very interesting. Today there are already machines from that company under the Reciclos brand that give prizes for recycling in QR format.
