Mitutoyo 530-122 Vernier Caliper

I was selected as one of the winners for the giveaway in the Industrial Robotics quiz community.element14.com/.../industrial-robotics-quiz

The giveaway is a Vernier Caliper and it arrived at my office today. As soon as I got home I started trying it out.

It is a Mitutoyo 530-122 Vernier Caliper. It is a high accuracy model: ±0.03mm. It has metric scale

Unboxing

It comes inside a cardboard box.

With a plastic cover and instructions for use. Use cases and how to read the measurements with the maximum precision of the tool

Can measure outside and inside diameter (OD and ID), depth, and steps. Range 0 - 150mm

Roadtest

I'm testing it by making a 3D model of the blue boogie bot from element14 although I don't need that much precision for this task. It's really comfortable.
It is not a light caliber, the weight is noticeable and it is appreciated when having it in your hand. It is very well balanced and handles very well with the right hand.

It is very simple, easy to read, I can do the readings well without the need for close-up glasses or a magnifying glass.

The numbers and lines have very good definition, are very easy to read and have a sensational contrast. The ruled surface is glare-free and looks good from any angle.

It has a metric scale which is what I am used to using. It also has a very useful clamping screw for forgetful people like me.

Thank you for this excellent gift, it will always be close at hand on the desk.

Very nice prize. You're already putting them to good use.

These are the two I have to hand.

At work, we used to use Mitutoyo, but for my own use I couldn't justify the cost so ended up buying the metal ones at the bottom of the picture. These were apparently German made, though there's no branding on them.

The plastic ones came from the cover of one of the UK electronic trade publications back in the 1990s or early 2000s (either Electronics Weekly or Electronics Times). There was a short-lived fad for giving away promotional items like this. These must have been sponsored by Anglia, who are a component distributor. They're surprisingly good for injection-moulded plastic.

My middle son is doing a 3D printing course at the institute and he has given me the OpenSCAD notes with which I am currently learning solving the proposed problems. It's great to make 3D models without having to learn key bindings just by writing scripts.

Yes, the micrometer is another gadget on the wish list along with a protractor.
In the case of the protractor, I am totally lost, the price and type variations are huge and I don't know very well which one I would need, if I need any.

Nice.  I looked at buying a Mitutoyo but ended up with a Duratool because I couldn’t really justify the cost.  It’s ok actually instructions are rubbish and I had to turn to internet.  Now you need a matching micrometer to go with it.
