Cool Tools Bench Awards 2018

Hello Community Members and happy June.

It is officially summertime here at the element14 offices, which is enough of a reason to celebrate but as we batted around some ideas we thought - why don't we involve the Community in some fun?  We have already been asking you about your favorite tools for our RoadTest reviews and now we'd like to present to you the Cool Tools Bench Awards!

image

Starting today and going through the entire month of June, we want you to submit photos and/or videos of your own bench or workspace for other Community members to see.  Then in the month of July we'll pick out some winners every week and send them some of our favorite Cool Tools chosen by us and other Community members like the ones below:

I have been accused of not really doing any electronics on my bench, but I actually do projects quite often. Perhaps it is Mom's fault as she always insisted that I pickup my toys at the end of each day…

This is a fun contest, but most of my lab bench is still packed until a have a more permanent facility. I currently only have unpacked those pieces I really need in my work. But with that said, here a…

Okay - this series of workspace images should be good for a chuckle...

First up is my computing office - note all the project boxes on either side of the desk - these are some of my current projects in progress. There is another table to the right with another computer and some tablets - and it is even messier. The table at the lower left has a 3D printer on it. The laser printer at the upper right has a robot on it. (a project in its early stages)

The robot is looking at my IoT on Wheels project. My Hack like Heck project is languishing in the box under the lamp. The coffee mug full of tools has a picture of a Tardis on it that becomes invisible when a hot drink is in the mug.

You cannot see it but there is a Tektronix oscilloscope hiding behind the right monitor - pulled out when needed.

    image

Next up are some random quasi inactive project boxes. I had to start adding labels so I could at least have a clue what is in each box.

    image

Then we come to my main electronics build area. It is most definitely messy especially in this picture, but it is organized to keep everything within easy reach. There is just enough room to squeeze into the workspace.

There is an awful lot of stuff in this picture, some of it might even be recognizable. The box on the left of the bench is full of SMT resistors on tape. It may not be obvious but each resistor value has a specific x-y coordinate slot. For example one column would have 1,10,100,1K, 10K, 100K,1M, 10M and one row would have 10, 12, 15, 18, 22, 27, 33, 47, 56, 68, 82, etc.

Can you spot the Heathkit vacuum tube voltmeter? Or the CRT monitor? There are more parts cabinets and project boxes and another computer under the camera and to the right that are not in the picture.

It would appear some usurper has commandeered my task chair.

    image

Finally here is my studio bench with flood lights on. Note the double stack of active project boxes on the left.

I put on the black Ben Heck T-shirt (currently on the task chair) when I need to prevent my reflection from showing up on one of the screens I am video recording.

That is my original element14 project (the Henrietta Project) still running in the upper right hand corner.

    image

Not shown is my mechanical work area - there is no unobstructed vantage point to take a decent picture at the moment.

There were no minions used in the making of this blog, however Sparky made an appearance, as did the Purple Panic Button and my Safe & Sound project and somehow even 7 of 9 ended up on set. She wasn't supposed to be in  the shot but when I realized the camera has captured her in the periphery, I decided not to crop her out.

    Hi Doug,

I am sitting here in an altered state as I have waited 4 years to see the Master's shop. It is a wonderful and beautiful thing to see. It is what my shop would look like if I had your skill and creativity. In your second picture I had to look twice as it looked similar to the wall in front of me right now.

It seems that I am not the only one with a dollar store bin / labeling compulsion image.  I will probably have some more things to say once I get a chance to let my vision penetrate the complexity. Thanks again for sharing.

    G'Day,

Awesome light tent! I go to the window with a cloth box from IKEA when I need strong lighting.

    G'Day,

Wow labels and separate matching containers. I thought containers were the boxes good were shipped in. I have to come out of my basement label more often into the light and discover some of the new an exciting products available.

Container create problems for me. It seems the lids from one type of container runs away with the bottom from another type of container. That and containers mate producing only lids or bottoms but never both. I seem to recall the industry labelled the condition tupperware.
