[Pi IoT] Plant Health Camera #11 - Summary

gpolder

29 Aug 2016

Old MacDonald had a farm and on his farm he grows crops, which he likes to monitor using the Internet of Things. Therefore he is in need of a camera capable of doing that. Luckily element14 came up with a challenge in which such a camera is developed. This page gives a summary of the project.

The project only focuses on the development of the Plant Health Camera, a Thing, which, since it runs on a Raspberry Pi, easily can be connected to the Internet.

Inspiration on how to achieve that, can be found in other submissions, for instance the IoT Farm  from jkutzsch.

Good question @kulky64, according to Wikipedia: The internet of things ( IoT ) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items— embedded with electronics , software , sensors ,…

    Aldrin,

I don't have any experimental results with the single camera solution.

But there is plenty literature reporting about this.

A starting point are the references mentioned in my application:

    Good day sir!

Thank you for this article! I just want to ask if you already make the single camera version of this plant health camera. I was tasked to make one and as a newbie, I am really having a hard time. I cant produce good ndvi images

Since the contest is closed, I will not edit the post anymore, but I really like to share a very nice video about the NDVI concept I found on youtube:

    Good question @kulky64,

    according to Wikipedia:

The internet of things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data.[1] In 2013 the Global Standards Initiative on Internet of Things (IoT-GSI) defined the IoT as "the infrastructure of the information society." [2] The IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure,[3] creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit.

In that sense my project can fully be counted as an IoT project. As I already told in the summary, the Plant Health Camera is a Thing, that since it runs on a Raspberry Pi, easily can be connected to the Internet. I agree that the networking part is not covered in my description, mainly due to lack of time, but making the images available on the network is not really a big issue.

    Gerrit.
