Connecting to the Edison over USB

I've been using Wifi to connect to the Edison but I've also spotted that the Yokto distribution provides the facility to connect using Network over USB. This can be useful as I've used it on other boards such as the BeagleBone Blue.

This is what you use to setup your Edison originally to flash.

I was using the usb network connection to ssh into my Edison - got pretty tiring though because I kept having to reboot the Edison every time I made a code change. It could be useful for some applications but keep in mind that you would need to set up the computer as a router. Before I set up wifi on my Edison, I tried to ping from the Edison to external networks through the USB network connection but the Edison couldn't reach them. It also couldn't use DNS even though the nameservers were set up properly. Of course it's possible I was just doing something wrong image.

But this is a good example of what I like about this device - it has lots of different ways of doing things.

I'd not expect that to work unless you'd done some kind of clever routing or sharing on your PC

If you have a "USB Network connection" and it's connected to your network, then there should be no reason it won't get out.

The only limits would be if your router rules stop you.

DNS is tied to being able to reach the DNS server.

In many setups this is external to your place and usually at the ISP.

Since the Edison couldn't get out (couldn't ping external) then it's not likely to work.

If you only connect the Edison via USB and don't turn on its Wifi then:

    • The PC to be able to connect to the Edison over one network (a virtual one over USB)
    • The PC to be able to connect to the Internet over its other network connector (wifi or hard wired)
    • The Edison would not necessarily be able to connect to the Internet

That is because these are 2 separate networks so your PC would need to be configured to route the network traffic as it is acting as an intermediary between the Edison and Internet.

If I have a raspberry pi with a powered USB hub and I plugged 16 Edisons in to it, created a bridge between all the USB interfaces on the Pi and then bridged that to my Ethernet interface, then I would have a cluster bomb waiting to explode.

Having the USB setup would be a nice backup, but for me, the USB default IP network was the same as my main home network, so I changed it.  Even if I would have connected to a different SSID on another VLAN, then I would not be able to route to my main network.
