Winners Announcement: Spy Nerd Projects for Spy Nerd Gadgets!

14 Dec 2021

Congratulations to scottiebabe for Spy Nerd - Laser Communicator!   You are the grand prize winner of the Spy Gadget bundle and you win a $200 shopping cart.

Congratulations to robogary for Bad Kitty Counter Spy .....another fabulous WRONGCO product,  dougw for Snoop Dog or Snoop Cat , and carmelito for Pi Spy Audio Recorder!   You are the first place winners and win Night Vision Gadget Binoculars and a $100 shopping cart.

The Spy Nerd competition encouraged you to do any project can be anything dealing with security or a spy related theme.  Your project could include Enet security type software projects, facial recognition on trigger, or not so serious fun stuff like spy gadgets, sibling detectors, and more.  The grand prize winner of the competition was @scottiebabe , whose effort to come up with the "Ultimate Spy Nerd Crown" was rewarded with a $200 shopping cart and a spy bundle kit that includes an AI RF Detector, a Noise Generator, and Night Vision Binoculars.  His project was a long range laser communicator to allow spys to stay off the LF to UHF air waves while still communicating with their spy colleagues at long distances (provided there is line of sight).

Spy Gadget Bundle:

AI RF Detector Noise Generator Night Vision Binoculars

Detect audio bugs, Wi-Fi cameras, IP cameras, GSM bugs, wiretaps, body wires, GPS trackers, phone taps, or other types of surveillance bugs in your room. Generate noise that replicates a crowded room’s ambient sounds, making it hard for microphones or eavesdropping ears to discern what you’re saying. Designed for hunting but can be adapted to other purposes. These low-light sights have 984 feet of infrared night vision range, 3X optical zoom, an IP56 rating for dust and water resistance, and use a pair of AA batteries

The other winning Spy Nerd projects come from robogary, dougw, and carmelito.   They will receive the Night Vision Binoculars shown above plus a $100 shopping cart.   robogary built a bad kitty spy counter in order to detect whether any of his 3 kitties were misbehaving.   In his own words, it can also be used for dogs, ferrets, piglets, and even demonic pre-school children.  The Bad Kitty Counter Spy can provide incriminating photos in the day and also in the darkest of night using infared night vision.  dougw is a fan of spy novels, not really into spying on people, so he decided to have some fun spying on cats with his cleverly named Snoop Dog or Snoop Cat project.   Finally,  carmelito built a Spy Audio Recorder using a Raspberry Pi, which starts recording audio when folks are in the room and then emails the transcript to the Spy.  Once someone enters the room, it detects if something is said and then transcribes the audio into text, after recording a .wav file and using a neural network.  For the first two parts of his project he uses a Raspberry Pi Zero W and a Pi 4 when he started exploring machine learning in the third part of his project.

The runners up were equally worthy.   maxpowerr built a spy camera in homage to all the spy's we don't think about and the ones that we do such as James Bond.  This post was a personal favorite of mine.  rahulkhanna built a system that was designed to detect intrusion (unauthorized entry) into a building or other area.  He did a fantastic job documenting the project and both the runner ups could easily have been winners.

Special thanks to BigG,  fmilburn, and Workshopshed for helping to judge this contest.  It wasn't an easy task as all of the projects on this doc were awesome and definitely worth checking out!

Without further ado, here are your winners....

I feel truly blessed to be the crowned the ultimate spy nerd in the spy vs spy battle (I apologize for forgetting which member made this reference). I feel bad maxpowerr did not place in the finishers…

Congratulations to all the winners. Very good and interesting projects. Unfortunately, due to my main work, I did not have enough time to complete the project on time. But this does not mean that I will abandon it. I have already received the missing parts, so I will complete it in the coming months.

I feel bad maxpowerr did not place in the finishers category, if the terms will allow it I would be happy to see either the (AI RF Detector, Noise Generator) spy toys sent to them.

Congrats to everyone for being truly awesome!

Congratulations and thanks to all the participants. Some very cool and creative ideas. I am a huge fan and envious of the scottiebabe project I would love to do something similar. Again, dougw surprised me with the creativity, detail and fine finish of his solution.
