It was again a nice episode with speakers discussing real life challenges such as health and stress.

Actually, in recent time we have kind of stopped discussing how our day-to-day life has changed and it has impacted badly to our health. The speaker has tried to speak on that. Normally, I would call it a toxic work culture. I do not know how would you call it?

After listening to this episode, I honestly started questioning how we approach health today. Everywhere you look, there’s advice—what to eat, how to train, when to sleep, whether to fast, whether not to fast. It feels like we have more knowledge than ever, yet somehow people are still struggling to stay healthy. That contradiction really stood out to me.

What also made a lot of sense was the explanation of habits. We often blame ourselves for not being consistent—skipping workouts, eating badly, or just “falling off track.” But hearing that habit formation is a slow biological process kind of changes that perspective. It’s not just about willpower. Our brains literally need time and repetition to rewire. That made me feel a bit less guilty about not being perfect all the time.

One idea that stuck with me was the difference between lifespan and health span. Living longer sounds great in theory, but if those extra years are spent dealing with illness or low energy, is that really what we want? I liked the mention of “joy span” as well, because it adds another layer—it's not just about being healthy, but actually enjoying your life while you’re living it.

I also found it interesting that something as simple as a daily check-in with another person can make such a big difference. Not an app, not a complicated system—just another human asking, “Did you do it today?” It sounds almost too simple, but at the same time, it makes total sense. We’re social creatures, and a bit of accountability goes a long way.

Another thing worth mentioning is how overwhelming the wellness space has become. There’s so much conflicting information that it’s easy to feel stuck. One person says coffee is bad, another says it’s good. Some promote intense routines, others say to slow down. At some point, it just becomes noise. That’s why I appreciated the idea of going back to basics—sleep, movement, real food, and small daily choices.

How about everyone just list one thing they think would be a simple but useful habit to form?

Instead of having lunch at the office desk everyday, I started going for a brisk 30min walk around campus (3,000+ steps).

I also swapped the coffee and fizzy drinks in the office for water.

This was a great talk, it stimulates thoughts about what can realistically be done to stay healthy ...

How about everyone just list one thing they think would be a simple but useful habit to form?

    I can start ...

I got into the habit of jogging from the parking lot to my office (it started because I was running late, but then I noticed if I arrived with an elevated heart rate and respiration, I could start the work day with high energy - no coffee needed) Any time you need a coffee, just jog for 1 minute instead - its even faster than drinking a coffee.

I listened to this particular podcast featuring Dr. Julia Jones during my morning coffee routine. I have been making an effort to listen to some podcasts as soon as I wake up rather than diving directly into my emails or messages via Slack, and this particular podcast had a nice effect.
The way Dr. Jones talked about her experience creating an all-girl rock band called "Pretty Crap" really made me smile. I used to play guitar just for fun, but once I was caught up with work, I stopped doing it. The way she explained how playing music and laughing with your friends makes you healthier and creates new connections in the brain is really inspiring me to pick up the guitar again on the weekends.

But what resonated most were her candid comments on the emphasis on healthspan and happiness rather than just longevity, and also her self-compassion in regard to creating habits. My father had several health problems throughout his life, which made me realize that I'd prefer to feel well while alive. Understanding that the brain requires months of consistent daily effort to form a proper neuronal connection alleviated much of my guilt when failing to adhere to a newly created habit. Her easy-to-implement daily check-in method with a friend sounds highly feasible to a busy life of a techie.
It was also nice that she canceled her gym membership but still succeeded with improving her health through minor modifications to her everyday activities such as walking up the escalator. It is more relatable than most of the overly extreme biohacking tips circulating the web today.
A minor recommendation for future podcast episodes could be concluding them with 2-3 practical takeaways so that listeners such as myself can implement some of the discussed ideas.
All in all, it was a great experience, and I'm looking forward to your next episode.
