New Workshop

Workshopshed
Workshopshed
20 Apr 2026

The garage and studio that came with the house in Suffolk have shown not to be really fit for purpose. The garage is leaking and the roof is made from asbestos making repairs problematic. The studio is ok other than needing to block out the light from the west windows to do any filming. The electrics are at best questionable.

So a new Workshopshed is now under construction. The base got installed last week and the concrete is curing. The plan is to build a timber frame and clad it in black wood with a red recycled plastic tiles on the roof. It's going to be a long slow build over several weekends but it should be up and running by the end of summer.

You are making steady progress. I look forward to seeing you back up and making projects again.

You are lucky to have the space to do that.

I needed to build the new one on top of the site of the old one, so had to go for a more modular approach. So I built a third of the new one in-front of the old one, then decanted the contents from the old to the new to allow the old one to be demolished and the remainder of the site to be prepared for the remaining two-thirds of the new one to be added onto it.

There was a bit of an issue encountered with the modular system, which prevented the end panel from temporarily being fitted to the back of the first third, so I had to improvise.

I had seriously considered that approach myself. Was going to either clad it to look like a shed or fence around it to limit the complaints.

Properties are pretty small in the UK and there are limits on how big a shed can be in relation to the property footprint before you have to go through a tedious planning application.

The plan is to build the new one, carry everything across then demolish the old one. Specialists will be needed to remove the roof.

7m by 3m on the inside. Not a kit but based on some classic designs.
