Hello Community members! As some of you know, we are celebrating the Community's 10th Birthday this year.  In our excitement, we thought a lot about what we wanted to do for our 10th birthday and came up with a variety of activities from the absolutely ridiculous (renting a bouncy castle, RasPi piñatas, partying on a private island) to the less ridiculous (team dinner and cake woowoo!) but once we found out our birthday would be coinciding with the release of the new Raspberry Pi 4, we knew we had to celebrate our birthday with Pi, not cake! (Please insert loud vuvuzela sounds here.)

As many of you have probably already seen over in the Raspberry Pi space, there's been a flurry of activity surrounding this latest release. Many retailers have either completely sold out or have all versions on back-order. Luckily, we managed to snag some of the elusive new Pi's in order to entice you all to help us continue celebrating our birthday through the summer by building some awesome projects.

So: what do you have to do to be in the running for one of the brand new Raspberry Pi 4's? Just follow the instructions below!

1. Register and/or log-in to the element14 Community

2. Leave a comment on this post telling us what you'd build with the new Pi 4 and its fun upgraded capabilities

After July 15th, we'll select up 20 members to receive a Pi!

Contest is now closed! Thanks so much to everyone who participated. We are in the process of reaching out to all our winners and will be shipping out your Pis the first week of August! Stay tuned for an update to this post where we will announce winners.

Want to be in the running for MORE cool stuff? For those of you who build said cool project(s) and post a blog along with photos and/or video in the Raspberry Pi space, tag your blog with HappyBirthdaye14 so we can all see your awesome work, appreciate it and continue the birthday celebrations by basking in the creativity of our Community members. If you do, we have some digital and/or physical "goodie bags" full of surprise swag and Newark/Farnell stuff we want to give away to you!

So, let us know in the comments below what fun projects you're looking forward to building and sharing!

And, if you haven't already checked out the plethora of posts surrounding the new Pi or the anniversary posts started by rscasny cstanton tariq.ahmad e14phil - check out the links below and participate. Some of them might even lead to more opportunities for cool stuff!

The PI4 is just iconic until now image I have ordered a 4Gb model that Farnell confirmed but is not able to ship. So, if I have the opportunity to have a 2Gb PI4 around next July 15 I am still on time. But let me step back. I'm writing a two-volumes opera for Makers, and I am in the final phase of the job, sending the versions to the editor, checking changes adding photos and so on. The titles are Vol1 - Projects For Makers based on Arduino and Vol2 - Projects For Makers on Raspberry PI. This editorial project (for the Italian editor Hulrico Hoepli in Milan) is not just a technical manual but a path through the Maker Community focusing the attention in these two platforms – Arduino and Raspberry PI – including chapters with contributions of notable worldwide characters connected to the Maker Community, as well a the contribution of tariq.ahmad and rscasny who explains to the Italian readers what does it means to be part of the Element14 community, the Project14 challenge and how makers can improve their knowledge testing new products, exchanging their knowledge, issues, doubts, etc. BTW, I am also trying to connect e14phil to speak about the Element14 challenges.

I plan to dedicate a chapter to the characteristics of the new Raspberry PI B4 introducing it in some of the projects presented in the second volume. The problem is that I have only the month of July and a week of August to do this, including making tests, photos and writing the chapter as well as integrating the new PI4 instead of the PI3 in some of the presented projects. At the moment my worry is at Red Alert level; if for some reasons Farnell can't ship the PI not later than next week I am obliged to exclude this chapter.

If someone is interested, below the main list of contents of the volume dedicated to the Raspberry PI I have translated to English.

Projects for Makers on Raspberry PI

    List of Contents

    Part 1 Linux Embedded

We are talking about the crucial difference - often ignored or underestimated - between

microcontrollers that do not have a real operating system and Linux Embedded machines, real

computers with superior functionality and in some ways amazing.

    Chapter 1 - It's not a microcontroller

Chapter 2 - A credit card sized computer

Chapter 3 – From Bash to Python, a software review

    Part 2 Raspberry PI HAT

HATs are somehow similar to Shields for Arduino, with some software and hardware complications,

because they must be able to be recognized by the operating system. Nothing that makes it

impossible to make custom HAT and based with specifications.

Chapter 4 - PiSense HAT to support physical disability.

Chapter 5 - PiJuice, a sophisticated battery for the Raspberry

Chapter 6 - Graspi-IO, Internet of Things with Raspberry

Chapter 7 - Pulse Train Hat, a precision controller for stepper motors

Chapter 8 - PiFace Digital 2, relays and digital I/Os

    Chapter 9 - Hand-made built PiHAT

Part 3 Raspberry PI as a dedicated machine

Contribution by Phil Hutchinson, Community Manager of Element14 and curator of the Challenge of

the Community, which in most cases includes a Raspberry PI

Chapter 10 - OSMC, a complete media station

    Chapter 11 - Retro-Pie, an 80's console

Chapter 12 - PiScope, building a portable oscilloscope

Chapter 13 - PiTop a laptop with Raspberry PI

Chapter 14 - Introduction to musical synthesis with PureData

Chapter 15 - Building a Mellotron with the Raspberry Pl

Part 4 Network, Cloud and Internet of Things

We talk about the possibility of using both in the professional and individual and for hobby use

Raspberry PI as a reference point, often associated with Arduino, for the implementation of IoT

projects. Speaking of product evolution on the market, contribution by Randall Scasny, Head of the

Element14 Road Test Group, an excellent opportunity for makers to stay up to date and experiment

    with new projects.

Chapter 16 - Building a time machine for Mac OSX

Chapter 17 - Raspberry PI and Arduino: IoT on the local network

Chapter 18 - Let's build an interactive magic mirror

Chapter 19 - Connecting two Raspberry PIs with the MQTT protocol

Chapter 20 - Artificial Intelligence experiments: Building a Borg access terminal

Chapter 21- Pi-Camera for photos and videos

Chapter 22 - A bot to chat on Twitter

Part 5 Resources of the Maker

    Chapter 23 - Open source and Creative-Commons

Chapter 24 - The largest community of makers

Chapter 25 – Using network resources

    Chapter 26 - Sharing knowledge

    Chapter 27 - Hackers

Chapter 28 - Suggestions and good intentions

    Hi Enrico,

Wow. Very interesting ToC! It's going to be an awesome book.

I only have one Pi 4, but if it helps, I can take some photos of it to send to you, with copyright transferred to you, so you can do as you like with them. Let me know if you wish me to do that, and what kind of photos you want.

    Shabaz!

Many thanks, image you are super. Well. if before the last week of July I see there is no way to do something else (it was interesting to show some of the described projects in the book (the most complex I think) with a 3B+ and 4 to test the performances increased, SSD SATA to USB3 for fast filesystem and data storage, etc.) I will contact you in private to decide how to take some shots so at least I can add a small chapter on it.

    Thanks a lot! Enrico
