Which accessories are compatible with the New Raspberry Pi 4 Model B?

NEW! Raspberry Pi 4

Technical Specifications | GPIO Pin Out | Unboxing Video | Benchmark Tests | Comparison Chart | FAQ | Quiz | Pi Accessories | Pi Projects | RoadTest

To give you some context to this post, first, meet the new Raspberry Pi 4 Computer.

It has the same physical almost "Credit Card Size" footprint but some major changes to the I/O which could interfere with your accessory choices.

Raspberry Pi is going through physical changes

The Older Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+The NEW Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
So what has changed?

New USB 3 Ports and the (Now Gigabit) Ethernet Port has changed sides!

Micro USB and Full Size HDMIDual Micro-HDMI and USB-C Type

Will my old case fit the New Raspberry Pi 4?

Fairly unlikely that your old case will fit and if it does It likely wont have I/O holes in the right places for the new Micro HDMI, USB 3, USB C and Ethernet

Will I need a new charger for the Raspberry Pi 4?

Yes. This one swap is the greatest positive, you are now less constrained and less likely to get "Brown Outs" caused by power hungry peripherals.

Will my GPIO Hat work on the new Raspberry Pi?

Very Likely! The Raspberry Pi 40Pin GPIO is built to be backwards compatible! You can double-check this here: Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Default GPIO Pinout with PoE Header

Will I need a new version of the PoE hat?

No, the PoE HAT designed for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ is fully compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.

    Oh. my!

Looks like the 2Gb and above use a USB-C power adapter so a new power source will be required for these.  The ethernet port location swap and dual HDMI will result in new cases being released for…

    Hi!

Maybe it's worth adding a fan and heatsinks to this list. Here's some suggestions:

Ceramic heatsink for the CPU, 15x15x2mm:   MPC151525TMPC151525T

Ceramic heatsink for the RAM, 10x10x2mm: MPC10…

No fair, after reading your post I now feel I am forced to apply for the RoadTest the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B (2GB) so I can experience all the new changes for myself. Great post, thanks.

Technically, shouldn't it be just USB-C and not Type-C?

    Still no RTC....

But not hard to add? And because focusing on not running on bare metal - the OS functions to fetch time may be sufficient in 101% of the use cases?

    Hi!

Maybe it's worth adding a fan and heatsinks to this list. Here's some suggestions:

Ceramic heatsink for the CPU, 15x15x2mm:   MPC151525TMPC151525T

Ceramic heatsink for the RAM, 10x10x2mm: MPC101020TMPC101020T

The ceramicness will allow the antenna to continue to function as best as possible.

The other parts may need cooling too, but even when there is no Ethernet or USB throughput, the CPU and RAM should be cooled.

    Low noise fan 25x25x10mm 5V 60mA: F251R-05LLCF251R-05LLC

The fan would need some creativity to mount in whatever enclosure is being used, but it's a small fan so it shouldn't be too hard to mount with screws or even glue. Or 3D print a bracket.

And to use the fan, a couple of capacitors to be used in parallel, and some jumper cables that can be chopped and soldered to the fan:

    100nF capacitor  A104K15X7RF5TAAA104K15X7RF5TAA

    22uF capacitor 20SEP22M20SEP22M

    Jumper wires BC-32629BC-32629

    Nice update.

I had assumed the new RPi would be backwards compatible, but it is always useful to have that confirmed.

Are the old cameras still compatible as well?

    Well, technically they all do

Just the others have that, plus some.
