Windows Embedded?

Former Member

Does anyone know if it's possible to run Windows Embedded on Beaglebone Black?  I've downloaded the WEC7 image from the Adeneo web site, and prepared an SD card as in the instructions, but it won't boot in my Beaglebone Black - it just sits there with the LEDs lit. Has anyone got this working? I've sent Adeneo an email, but I thought I'd ask here too.

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a question.

What kind of developer requirements are satisfied or benefits obtained by running a closed and proprietary operating system like Windows Embedded on open hardware like the BBB?  I looked at Adeneo's website first for a hint, but they don't seem to explain it either.

Of course it may be simply "We do it because we can", and if so then fair enough I guess.  But if would seem to be of dubious developer utility compared to harnessing the numerous well-supported open operating systems that run on embedded ARM.  And it's certainly out of step with the ethos of open hardware like the BBB specifically.

I have a Win32 application which I have developed, which needs to run 24 hours a day, and I just thought it would be interesting to see if I could get it to run on a BBB. Sorry to have offended by mentioning the W word; I didn't realise that the BBB came with restrictions on what I was supposed to do with it. I'll go away and wait for a response from Adeneo.

My question was about what requirements would be satisfied by it, and you answered that perfectly in your first sentence.  It's what engineers do, satisfy requirements.  You developed an app on Win that you'd like to run on BBB without further development effort on your part, and that's your requirement.

The rest of your response, from "Sorry to have offended" onwards, is unrelated to anything that was said, and your inference about restrictions seems to be incorrect.  According to the manual, you're mostly free to do anything you want with BBB, although CircuitCo won't be providing any support outside of their intended area.

The first solution that comes to mind isn't always the best.  Since you are the developer of that application, you may want to examine whether it wouldn't be more effective and cheaper to port the application to Linux rather than to buy in a Windows Embedded solution from Adeneo.  Your options for support may be rather limited if you take the commercial route, because almost all community effort on BBB is in the open source world.  It's worth considering the alternative approach.

Hello I was wondering if you ever got this configuration working?  I also am trying to configure the Beaglebone black with Windows Compact Embedded 7 from Adeneo.  So far I have had no luck.  Thanks for any information you can share.
