APPCRASH EAGLE 6.4 on WIN 7 64

terje
terje over 12 years ago

Dear the support team at Cadsoft!

I have just purchased and installed Eagle pro shematic and layout package on to my brand new win 7 64 computer.

I'm now trying to design some new components with the library editor but every 3 to 10 minutes the application crashes and the work is lost.

To me it appears that the crash happens randomly. It can happen when I'm resizing the window, moving a element, copy a element, changing the grid. pushing the undo button  etc. etc.

For now the Eagle is useless as this happens too frequently.

The eagle program is installed under C:\eagle

The version is 6.4.0.

What did I do wrong?

Is this a known issue?

Windows crash report:

I am having the same problems using 6.4.0 under Windows 7 64 bit.

First I could get the app to crash while editing text properties in the schematic editor but now I have just lost a lot of work in the library editor when editing the properties of a plated through hole drill size when modifying an existing part.

When I booted Eagle 6.4.0 back up it had lost the working directory I use as well as where my libraries are stored and reverted back to defaults.

My projects and library files are saved on a network drive and have been since I first started using Eagle at version 6.0 so its not that - I have reverted back to 6.3 so I can continue working on an urgent project.

    TO ALL:

The problem is with all 32bit programs running within the 64bit Windows. Change from 64 to 32 and probelm solved. From the day Windows XP was avalilable in 32bit and 64bit mode, it has been a problem. And it has not been solved.

I hope your problem really does go away in the Win64 if you run in 32-bit mode, but I would be very careful and not count on it.  My computer is a 32-bit machine and it is having crashing issues with version 6.4 too.  Version 6.3 is still working fine.

Considering the number of applications out there (Photoshop, Sony Vegas Pro

etc.) that are going to 64 bit only, having to switch back to 32 bit is

hardly a "handy" solution these days (although I do dual boot into XP Pro

32 if I want).  My wife won't let me have a separate computer for each

    application though ...

This is NOT an x64 vs x86 64-bit/32-bit issue. The app has worked reliably in 6.3.0 on x64 so I strongly feel it's something that has changed in 6.4.0 that is causing the instability.

I too have moved my projects and libraries to a different location. It is on a different logical partition on the same physical hard drive - it's a laptop so it's not network connected.

One of the real issues here that Cadsoft should be taking into account here is that the "user data" store should not default to be inside the program files directory. That's the reason people change these locations - and that's why they should make that a part of the design.

    Hi Brett and others,

Let's try to troubleshoot this. Reply with a detailed and exact

description of what you do to create the crash. We have a Windows 7

laptop here in the office with EAGLE installed on which I could try to

recreate the issue. If I can recreate it, then I will pass it on to our

developers and this will be fixed for the next update.

Be as detailed and specific as you can mention any relative conditions

in a step by step manner.

Thanks everyone and we'll get this solved soon.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

    Mine was a simple repro.

    create a new schematic.

    add a resistor or two

create the board from the schematic

    rearrange parts into board area

    add text item

    write text into it

    place text twice

    press escape twice

    info

click one of the text items

    change the layer

    click OK

    crash...

The same issue could be repro-ed on a board that I created with 6.3.0 some months back. Open the project, go to the board, info, click a text item, change from tnames to bnames layer, click OK, bam.

note, I am running on Windows 8 (x64) not Windows 7.

I am now back to running 6.3.0 and those steps above are now working as expected, no crash.  I tried uninstalling 6.3 and reinstalling 6.4 and it didn't clear up the issue so I uninstalled 6.4 again and put 6.3 back.

But, because I'm a troubleshooter at heart, I will be happy to put 6.4.0 back on and capture any info you can use.

Having followed Brett's instructions my Eagle 6.4.0 will crash the exact same way under Windows 7 64 Bit.

My Eagle 6.3.0 works fine following the exact same instructions.

Also I can get the schematic editor in Eagle 6.4.0 by doing the following.

    New schematic

Add text (I placed "test text" on layer 97 info).

Right click and select properties on the text.

Do nothing with the dialog box that pops up, just click ok.

    App crash.

    Thanks Guys,

If anyone else can provide a procedure, please do so. I'm collecting as

much data as I can and I plan to test these in the coming days.

    Hi Brett,

I have tried reproducing it on our Windows 7 machine and was unable to

reproduce the error. My conclusion now is that it must be a 64-bit

related issue so I have forwarded my conclusions along with the

procedure you've provided to Germany so that they can try to recreate

    the bug.

I will keep you posted, in the process of attempting to recreate the

crash I stumbled on to a minor bug which I have also reported to the

    developers.

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge

I also installed version 6.3.0 and I see the same problem.

The first crash took quite a while until it happened. But after the first time it is totally unstable.

    Best regards

    Matthias

I am using 2 monitors but I think this should be not the cause of the problem
