APPCRASH EAGLE 6.4 on WIN 7 64

terje
terje over 12 years ago

Dear the support team at Cadsoft!

I have just purchased and installed Eagle pro shematic and layout package on to my brand new win 7 64 computer.

I'm now trying to design some new components with the library editor but every 3 to 10 minutes the application crashes and the work is lost.

To me it appears that the crash happens randomly. It can happen when I'm resizing the window, moving a element, copy a element, changing the grid. pushing the undo button  etc. etc.

For now the Eagle is useless as this happens too frequently.

The eagle program is installed under C:\eagle

The version is 6.4.0.

What did I do wrong?

Is this a known issue?

Windows crash report:

    Additional information about the crash:

When I changed the backup time interval from 2 minutes to 30 minutes the crash interval decreased accordingly. It still crashes but not so frequently. To me it appears that the eagle.exe will crash if I do something while the application makes a backup copy in the background process. Yeah, that’s great! ……..reminds me of running an old win95 program on a win 7 computer.

    !!Any suggestions?

Is it OK to have the /projects directory on a different drive? Like e:\eagle-projects?? And the eagle application on c:\eagle-6.4.0\??

    Hi Terje,

I would recommend you save your projects to a directory other than

EAGLE's installation directory. That's probably the cause of your

crashes, Windows 7 places restrictions on the Program Files folder which

    are giving the issues.

If you save your projects in a different directory you'll see that you

    won't get the crashes.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

I am also experiencing similar problems.  I have downloaded 6.4.0 just to try it out.  It is installed in C:\Program Files (x86)\EAGLE-6.4.0\bin\eagle.exe.  Projects are stored in My Documents\Eagle, so I don't think that is the problem.

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Thanks’ for the feedback.

    I have tried the following:

    1.

The eagle program directory is placed under C:\programfiles(x86)\eagle 6.4.0

The eagle project directory is placed under C:\MyDocuments\eagle

As Rich and I have experienced, the program still crashes.

    2.

The eagle program directory is placed directly under C:\eagle 6.4.0

The eagle project directory is placed under C:\MyDocuments\eagle

And again after a while.... the program still crashes.

It is obvious that the program crashes when it does the backup routine in the background while at the same time functions like moving, copying, wire, pasting, or clicking a tool button, etc. is executed in the foreground. Increasing the backup interval time, decreases the probability of a crash.

Does the win crash report tell the development people something?

Hi, I also just encountered this problem with version 6.4.0  I emailed tech support and Jorge Garcia responded and mentioned moving my user libraries and projects like he did for you.  I tried this and it did not help.  I'm using Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.  My computer at home is the main problem.  I can crash the program on it easily.  I have re-installed the program and still have the same problem.  I even uninstalled all older versions to make sure nothing was interfering.  My problem seems to be related to the buffer that the program uses to store copied items to.  For example, when you want to move several items, you but a box around them to select them and then can copy and paste.  If you forget to choose items and then click on Paste, it usually pops up a little window telling you that the buffer is empty and you can clear that and try again.  This program is not doing that on my machine.  If I try and copy anything or just click paste, either way, the program just shuts down without any notice.

Right now, I've got version 6.30 installed and it is working fine on both computers with all libraries and projects in subfolders under the Eagle directories that are created by the installation program.  I can't seem to get version 6.40 to work.  It is working at my office, but I'm scared of it.  It crashed on me once there too the other day and I wondered why because I had never had this program do this.  Now after my experience at my home computer, I've decided to use version 6.3 until I can get someone to help figure out what is going on.

I have crashing in 6.4.0 as well.

I am not running on Windows 7, but am on Windows 8 (x64).

I can repro the crash relatively easily.

Open a new schematic. Drop a couple of parts on the schematic. Doesn't seem to matter what, really.

    Go to board view.

Add text. Type something. Drop it on the board twice.  Escape, escape to get out of text mode.

Get info of one of the text objects. Change it from whatever layer it was on to tPlace (or any other layer really - in fact you don't need to change anything in this dialog.  Click OK.

    App crashes.

I can probably capture more info if the team can tell me what you want.

As you can guess, this is a pain to work around.  Having to place the item in question on the right layer from the outset is a drama, particularly when you want to copy an existing item to the other side of the board.

Hi anyone from the CadSoft team.... is this the right way to register this as an issue?  Any other suggestions on how to get working? Uninstall/reinstall of 6.4.0 didn't help.

As an aside, I uninstalled 6.4.0 and then reinstalled it,no change in status - open an existing board or a new board, change layer on a text object, bam.

I then uninstalled 6.4.0 and installed 6.3.0 and the same action now works, so I'm leaving it this way.

I am having the same problems using 6.4.0 under Windows 7 64 bit.

First I could get the app to crash while editing text properties in the schematic editor but now I have just lost a lot of work in the library editor when editing the properties of a plated through hole drill size when modifying an existing part.

When I booted Eagle 6.4.0 back up it had lost the working directory I use as well as where my libraries are stored and reverted back to defaults.

My projects and library files are saved on a network drive and have been since I first started using Eagle at version 6.0 so its not that - I have reverted back to 6.3 so I can continue working on an urgent project.

    TO ALL:

The problem is with all 32bit programs running within the 64bit Windows. Change from 64 to 32 and probelm solved. From the day Windows XP was avalilable in 32bit and 64bit mode, it has been a problem. And it has not been solved.
