Idea to improve exploration of the EAGLE libraries

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hello,

Incorporating a second vertical bar at each library facilitates the exploration, Because scans independently each library, rather than explore the full vertical bar

It is a good idea +1 or -1?

Screenshothttp://jaimeza.org/Temp/Request/Request_eagle_cadsoft_multiverticalbar.gif

Note The vertical bar (main) on the right explores the whole of libraries

+1, please vote

I think it would be breaking many design rules. The left expansion triangle would expand but not expose everything, which is not what people are accustomed to on any OS. I could see it having some value if one wanted to (say) compare the v-reg library with the varistor library on the same screen simultaneously as shown in the screenshot, but currently I can't think of any use-case for that. Plus, it would break down with smaller screen laptops, where people may resize that window to be a fraction of the size of the screenshot currently.

Sorry for my bad English image

    >> The left expansion triangle would expand but not expose everything,

The idea isnot to expand the entire list, if not part of it, to facilitate vertical scanning, In the animation I made can be seen better

When the library list is extensive, it loses his focus, difficult to exploration, my idea has a better view of the library "tree"

New animation, now with vertical ellipsis (...) to indicate +/- files or to expand files

I do understand what you're suggesting, but currently I don't understand the use-case. Do you want to compare the contents of two library folders, and hence you wish for both to be open and viewable on the screen at the same time?

I personally find the opposite to be true, and would rather that open library folders would 'auto-close' if I opened a different folder without closing a previously opened one. There is nothing I usually wish to compare in libraries (but I many be using it differently to you).

I can see a benefit of your suggestion in that it may speed up scrolling, but an 'auto-close' (or just remembering to close manually) would be

just as fast for scrolling purposes, and would require no additional scrollbars (and I dislike the multiple sub-panes in general, because it doesn't scale for smaller displays, because then a greater bulk of the view is taken up by the library name header bars and the additional scroll bars.

Generally if I open a library, I want to see as much as possible of 'that' library or subsection.

I can see this approach may be useful if (for example) VRegs were broken into brands so you could compare (say) NatSemi offerings to Linear Tech.

However, this isn't usually the time I do component selection, so wouldn't really offer anything.

The main use of my idea is to improve the exploration of the libraries, but Eagle has numerous libraries, which makes it very difficult to explore the "tree" of libs
