Making a device, packages are not selectable

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I am trying to create a new library part. In the final steps of the process, combining the symbol with the package, I am unable to select the package from the list. Its on the list, but is a lighter gray color and not selectable.

Can any instructors offer a suggestion on getting over this hurdle?

I have noticed this in other library's I didn't create, also

    Hi Daniel,

This implies that there are more pins in the symbol than pads in the

package. Double check your symbol and make sure that you don't

accidentally have two pins on top of each other.

Well, I'm certainly not an "instructor" but as this is a public NNTP

    group...

The greying out (which was added at V5, I think) indicates that the

package is unsuitable for use on your device, most likely because it

does not have enough pads for the number of pins on the symbols in the

device. You need to check that you've got enough pads on your package,

that your symbol doesn't have stray pins and that your device doesn't

    contain any stray extra symbols.

    Rob

    Thanks guys,

    That was it.

Now what happen when you have something like a voltage regulator that comes in different packages that have less pin or features? Do you have to create a separate symbols for this?

Traditionally yes, you would. I think something was done on V6 but as

I'm still (mostly) using V4 I'm accustomed to different devices for the

    78xx in SO-8 vs. TO92

It was never an issue for devices where the TSSOP-20 merely had two

extra N/C pins compared to the SO-18 but where it had a doubled-up

ground pin they would have to be separate devices. The symbol would also

have to be different unless the extra pins are "implied" or "hidden"

such as supply pins, and the device could include them as "on-demand"

    symbols.

Again, this is for V5 and earlier, it may not be true of V6. However, if

you're talking "less feature" then it's a change of visible pins on the

schematic too, so that would still be a different device.

If the symbol is exactly the same, you can use multiple packages.  In

such cases, the extra pins may have a common internal connection.  An

example of this is where you have a FET in an 8-pin package.  Three of

the pins may be connected to the source, one for the gate, and four for

the drain.  In other cases, the extra pins are left unconnected.  The

    datasheet will tell.

In v6, it is possible to connect multiple pads (on the package) to a

single pin (on the symbol).  The connections can be ANY or ALL.  In the

case of ANY, the the connecting net can be routed to any of the pins for

that signal.  In the case of ALL, the connecting net must be routed to

all of the pins for that signal.

If the regulator has an extra feature, such as an enable pin, you will

have to create a different symbol to accommodate this and connect pins

    and pads appropriately.

    HTH,

        - Chuck
