Cannot get pad names to display in package editor

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 16 years ago

I'm having a problem with a copy of EAGLE V4.16 that I've used for the last

couple of years without problems.

In the last few days I've found that I can't get the pad names to display on

packages in the library editor! Both the SET PAD_NAMES ON command or the

Options -> Set->Misc->Display Pad Names menu pick check box have no effect.

If I transfer the library to another system in our office the pad names

display correctly, so I reckon it can't be the data in the library file

itself. Re-installing the EAGLE package doesn't help.

Is there a hidden layer I need to turn on, an .epf file or an registry entry

that's got corrupted somewhere?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

If you change the Options -> Set->Misc->Display Pad Names, the changes

are not visible immediately. You must REDRAW the screen to get the new

results. Maybe it is just that.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, using REDRAW command (or button) or

any other command that causes the image to refresh still doesn't cause the

    pad names to be displayed.

I don't think it is anything to do with the library files themselves as the

pad names don't display on packages in the libraries that are part of the

EAGLE distribution. The same libraries also work perfectly on another EAGLE

system  we have in the office. Uninstalling and reinstalling the EAGLE

package doesn't help either. Is there a registry entry or something that is

retained when EAGLE is reinstalled that may have become corrupted?

    Regards,

Don't you see the pads names if you zoom further into the drawing?

Provided "Display pad names" is active in Options/Set/Misc and the

Pads layer or Top/Bottom layer for SMDs is displayed.

    Problem solved!

The problem is with the use of background colours and the order in which

    colours written to the screen.

If you issue SET PALETTE WHITE in the package editor (which I like to do)

then the pad names are written in grey first and then the pad or smd is

written on TOP of the name. If the name is smaller than the pad then you

don't see it! That was the problem. You can check this if you change the

name of the pad to make it bigger than the smd pad as you can see the large

name extending out from under the smd pad.

The behaviour when you SET PALETTE BLACK or SET PALETTE COLORED is

different. The smd pad is displayed first and then the pad name is written

    in grey over the top.

So the workaround is don't develop packages using SET PALETTE WHITE mode if

you want to see the pad names.

The solution is when you SET PAD_NAMES ON the pad name should always be

written on top of the pad or smd irrespective of the PALETTE employed.

Hopefully this is the case with later versions of EAGLE.

    Klaus,

Your screen shot isn't what I am seeing. See enclosed screen dump. This is

of three smd pads with SET PALETTE WHITE and SET PAD_NAMES_ON. The pad names

are P$1, P$2 and P$3 as you would expect, but you can't see them. Before the

screen shot was taken I renamed the top pad to a long name so you can see

that it is actually dispayed under the pad. Weird. EAGLE 4.16 behaves the

same way on both systems here at the office.

I hope this helps explain and help diagnose the problem.

I'm sorry, I totally missed that you are using EAGLE 4.16 (although

you mentioned that in the first line of your message).

EAGLE 4.16 uses "subtractive" color mixing on white background, which

means that the default color #7 (dark gray) mixed with color #4 (red)

doesn't result in a new color.

You could set the color #7 in the "white background" palette to some

other value that better mixes with the basic colors.

    Klaus,

Thanks for the explanation and workaround. I'll use it (or SET PALETTE

    BLACK!) in future!
