Hi all

I can't import a SVG file on EAGLE 7.4 with OS X I have this error message

"You must at least 3 point to create a polygon !!!!"

Any idea ?

Help should be great.

Thanks

    Hi Ritchie,

How are you importing an SVG into EAGLE? I've looked and I have no import option for this and there are no ULP in my installation in any v7 version of EAGLE that look like they would do the job. Is this a 3rd party ULP you are using? From the error message it looks like maybe something that is just a line with a start and an end point in the SVG is being interpreted as a polygon by the imported and hence it doesn't actually have enough points to draw the polygon. Where does the SVG come from? Is it exported from a drawing tool or something?

    Best Regards,

Hi Rachael and many thanks for your prompt reply.

The ULP for SGV import is "svg2poly.ulpt" here the link enclosed :

    https://github.com/cmonr/Eagle-ULPs

I tested this ULP because I have more prob. with OSH Park, when I upload my

project with a logo in bmp it seems to be not recognize !!!!!! I decided to

test with alternative SVG import but not working....I'm going to be crazy

    !!!

Do you can do some tests for me please ? try to import the logo I attached

and upload the berber fiel into a zip on OSH Park and let me know ?

Here my personal mail if you want :

    mailto:ritchie@ritchie.fr

    Are you in UK ?

    regard and thanks by advance.

    Hi Ritchie,

Sorry for the delay getting back to you, work got in the way Friday and then I had a packed schedule this weekend.

Anyway, I have just tried a simple board through OSH Park with your logo imported. It seems I can create the gerbers successfully with their CAM job and upload them and all looks ok except the bitmap logo is omitted from the preview. It doesn't give any errors, it just doesn't show up. I checked the gerbers with gerbv and the logo is showing there. So then I ran the same output data through the Eurocircuits online quote and it all appears to be fine, the logo appears correctly. So I think the issue is OSH Park. I don't know if this is the same error you were seeing but the data output from EAGLE looks fine as it works elsewhere.

    Hi All,

It might be the case that the OSHpark viewer might not be able to handle

a high-pixel count bitmap. This was the case with gerbv a few years ago,

I don't know if it's been corrected since.

In general, for the logos you want to use the lowest resolution image

that will give an acceptable result. The image might show up in the OSH

park viewer if you lower it's resolution.

Hi Jorge and thanks for your reply...

Yes I think this a resolution image, I find a solution with lowest resolution but the prob. seems to be preview mode because once you click on "continue" you can see the logo.

Anyway OSH suggest me to use .SVG format but the ULP don't works did you test this format ? if yes do you can feedback the me the results ?

Thanks again for your help and regards

    Hi Ritchie,

I've just tried svg2poly.ulp with three different SVG files and I get different errors with each. It seems to have limited compatibility with actual SVG files which is a shame.

    You're welcome Ritchie.

Just for completeness, I just created a really simple SVG file with a simple polygon and nothing else and the ULP also failed to work with this too so I am interested to know what SVG files this does work with and how they are created because as far as I can tell it's not working at all.

Anyway, I hope you manage to move forward with your project and get your boards done ok. Let me know if you need and further help.

    Best Regards,

FYI, the ULP contains some information about author and capabilities.

Either read usage from control panel, or read the plain ULP text. Also,

it creates a file "svg2poly.log" wich could give more info whats going

    wrong.

    Hi Morten,

I found some more detailed info in the README.md on github. Basically it is

designed to deal with the output from Inkscape and can only handle paths. I

don't use Inkscape and don't actually need to use this ULP myself so I will

leave it up to the OP to try out Inkscape and see if they can get their

original svg file exported in a way which works with this ULP.

    Best Regards,

Hi all and thanks for your help.

I note that the ULP works only with INSKAPE output process.

What a pity...if someone have another solution let me know.

I used bitmap import and then drew polygons manually over it to avoid

the huge number of rectangles created by the import.

Alternatively you could look at DIY milling or lasercutter sw. They can

probably make importable milling vectors out of high dpi bitmaps to get

a smoot result. But tbh, this sounds a bit awkward.

    Hi Ritchie,

Why don't you try converting the SVG to a DXF with something like this: https://cloudconvert.com/svg-to-dxf

Then you can try to import the resulting DXF into EAGLE.

As the DXF importer is supplied as part of EAGLE and integrated in the UI by CADSoft it may be a little fuller in implementation than the SVG importer you were using. I've not tried converting an SVG in this way and importing the resulting DXF so I don't know how well it will work but it might be worth a try.

    Hi Ritchie,

I just tried it and it worked fine with the SVG file I started with. The resulting DXF imported into layer 50 of my layout without issue. Maybe it's a scaling thing and it's there but scaled incorrectly?

    Ritchie

Layer 21 works for me too. Just to make sure we are both doing the import in the same way here is how I did the import.

In the board editor I do:

    File -> Import -> DXF....

Select my .dxf file and choose my target layer then click ok.

You then get another window with the generated script for creating the actual image in the selected layer. This has two options, Run or Cancel. Choose Run and the image should then appear.

Are you getting the script window pop up with the option to run the script?

    Best Regards,

    I DON'T UNDERSTAND !!!!!!

I will do another tests and I let you now my friend

Thanks for you patience but it seems I must to be STUPID !!!

So you've not taken your SVG file and converted it to DXF using the web converter I linked to?

The import process in your video seems to take a very long time and if you look at the script it generates there is nothing of note in it which explains why it draws nothing. I think the DXF output from Adobe illustrator must be generating something that the importer in EAGLE doesn't like.

So I searched google for SVG files of varying complexity to test this out, I found a simple one of some gears first, then some more intricate patterns and finally I found an SVG called "Awesome Tiger" all of which I exported to DXF using the website I linked and then imported into EAGLE. They all worked. The last one took a LONG time to draw but I now have a test board with a line drawing of an awesome tiger!

It seems that the process I described above, using the tools I suggested, does actually work. I think if you take your SVG file and convert it to DXF in the same way I did then you might find it works.

    Best Regards,

Have you got a MSN or ICQ it will more simple isn't it ?

Thanks again for your precious help but I thing I don't have any chance at this time.

    Hi Ritchie,

Unfortunately I don't have MSN or ICQ here I'm afraid sorry.

I've not seen your actual SVG file but I can't think why it wouldn't work with the process I have described based on my tests with arbitrarily complicated SVG files. If I can import an awesome tiger as a line drawing into a test board I am sure your logo will import ok as it's likely to be way less complicated than that.

    Best Regards,
