EAGLE v8 Update Policy

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 9 years ago

Hello Autodesk Support,

Can you explain the nuances around updating policy?  If I'm using EAGLE

v8.0 and v8.1 comes out, am I forced to upgrade?  Can I use v8.0

indefinitely?

I absolutely don't want to be forced into an upgrade in the middle of a

design project.  I may choose to do so if the benefits outweigh the risks.

But no professional takes on CAD updates without a lot of thought and

testing to make sure there aren't unintended consequences of the upgrade.

I want to make sure I will maintain that control, even if that means never

upgrading to a particular version ever.

Cheers,

James.

I just looked at the Autocad page, Subscription pricing, and they

include older versions there. Perhaps someone can clarify on the Eagle

    side.

I still have my DOS version, and Just upgraded to 7.7 from 4.5,  I

still use the Older versions for maintenance.

FYI, I am not happy with the Subscription offering.

    Cheers

    Hi James,

Whenever a new update comes out, you will see a button in the control

panel to Update your EAGLE. If you don't click on that button you will

continue to use the same version of EAGLE until you click on the Update

    button.

If you never hit that button, then you will never update. As long as you

keep paying the subscription you can continue to use that same version

of EAGLE and upgrade when you feel ready.

    Hope that clarifies things.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Thanks Jorge,

    Now the next level questions:

As a design house my customers come to me and tell me what version of EAGLE

they are on.  So I currently have the following versions all installed at

once:  6.5, 6.6, 7.5, 7.7.  Will I be able to have multiple versions of V8

    installed on the same machine?

Also, in the past, buying a v7 license would also unlock older versions

before v7 (ignoring the *** child that v7.0 was).  If I'm a design

house and I have a customer who requires me to use v7, then how do I get

    that when I buy a v8 license?

As a design house I can't force my customers to upgrade their EAGLE license

so I have to use what they tell me they want since that decision has other

    implications to their workflow.

    Cheers,

    James.

Hi James, I did my last Eagle upgrade through your company. Emails

detailing upgrade information for V8 were supposed to have gone out.

Will I get one as I bought through you vs Cadsoft directly?

Hi Jorge, I saw in another thread your reply about the license text that

talks about having to remove old versions.

As long as were not using the licenses on more machines then originally

allowed and we are not expecting support for those older versions, I am

not sure I understand the rational for having to remove them.

I don't plan on migrating all my designs to V8. I also have copies of

eagle installed going all the way back to when I first started using

your product and still have some designs not migrated.

I think it needs to made clear in the license text that removal of old

versions only pertains to the versions offered for subscription. Even if

we obtain V8 through an "upgrade"

If I can't keep my paid for license of 7.7 around for perpetuity then I

can't see myself upgrading to or licensing a V8+ subscription.

    Thanks

    Glenn

    Hi Jorge,

I apologize if you've already said, but it's just to be sure once again.

    That means I'll never own my licensed EAGLE v8, won't I? If I don't

renew the subscription I cannot use the program anymore, even without

    any further update? Too bad...

    I'm stuck with v6, because v7 doesn't justify the upgrade costs. v8

sounds interesting but I think your new policy doesn't help old users to

"buy" the new version (actually we don't buy anything, but we rent some

    time to use your software).

I can afford the cost if it is one shot - not every year! And what about

if you raise the price? We don't own anything, so we must pay again and

    again.

I'm going to stay with v6 as long as possible then look for alternatives.

I'm not sure where this concern has arisen from. It looks to me that so long as you keep paying your subscription your currently installed version will continue to work. I don't see anything that compels you to upgrade to a newer version when it comes out.

    Hello Glenn,

You'll have to contact Autodesk.  They I received an email on Jan 10, and a

subsequent letter by courier, that terminated my distribution agreement on

Jan 13--the day they stopped processing v7 licenses.

Sorry for any inconvenience but right now you I don't know any more about

this process than anyone else outside of Autodesk.  If they had asked I

could have predicted this backlash on the licensing scheme.  I did predict

it on v7.0 when Farnell tried a similar move though no one at Farnell

listened at the time until it was released and it was too late.

    Cheers,

    James
