What Will You Do With Your New Raspberry Pi 3?

I'm going to do something that a lot will consider mainstream.  A full blown media player.  I never managed to get really good, smooth video streaming off the original Pi.  I'm going to take the opportunity to build it into a 5 channel audio amp I have and make a media centre, with multiple input and output sources. If there is enough grunt, it'll also be a mini-NAS. The bluetooth will be really handy for a dedicated remote control modified from infra-red.

The RPI 2 was good but it lacked BLE and I am hoping to add the TI BLE lights in direct connection to the RPI in my Home automation system. The extra horsepower will be useful when using Open to take in Visual stimulus. Consider this...

Use OpenCV to track a particular object and use TI BLE LEDs to generate colors correspondingly.

I'm looking forward to getting familiar with the WiFi/BLE capabilities to better support the flood of support queries that are sure to follow.

First comment... I have now sworn off PCs for home use.  I have been using Pi B, B+ and B2, and just ordered my B3.  If the upgrade is as good as predicted, I am kissing PCs good bye. 

Second, for work, I am going to start porting our monitor application to propose a low cost solution for emerging countries. The GPIO and touch screen should handle all the communication needed, and make it a credible solution.

This sounds like the best platform yet to build a car stereo out of. with the bluetooth built in, pairing a cell phone should be easier.  Thats where I would like to take my raspberry pi 3 project. Developing an inexpensive car stereo probably running KODI

I've got a bluetooth ODBII adapter for my truck. I've been toying with the idea of hooking up a small device to get real time readings and displaying them in my overhead console. The built in BT may come in handy for that.

Nifty idea. If you want, the information is available for the protocol of the messages from Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and the document is J1978 or J1979 (old brain cells) one is the messages, the other is the scan tool, and I forget which one is which (I was on the committees back in the early 90s when they were being developed, fun times).

I was actually serious about it enough once to download all those docs and look into it. I was gonna use an arduino, but this might be a better option.

You should be able to get enough information to make a kind of performance recorder as well. All sorts of engine information is available like Air/Fuel levels, O2 and knock sensor, as well as engine speed and general sensor readings.  The information is not real-real time (can't use it to run the motor), but the data would be current with all the status (including any error conditions or emissions data).
