Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a case for the Model B?
That's a good question also I think a great business opportunity for those with laser cutters or 3d printers like hackerspaces. I would definately pay some money for a nice case/enclosure.
Looks like there's already a few designs on Thingiverse:
I have put a RepRap design on thingiverse : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:16104
Also put a version on shapeways. http://www.shapeways.com/shops/picase
I have 4 versions there.
With 1mm walls - open bottom and closed bottom
With 1.4mm walls - open bottom and closed bottom
I would advise the 1.4mm walls version, because it is much much stronger. Bad side it is a bit more expensive because it uses more material
There is a big difference between a RepRap version and the one on shapeways.
For RepRap printing everything needs to be supported, so there is a strange case split needed to get this working.
The 2 case halfs stick together by friction....
Downside of Shapeway is the price... but it is very very well made, very fine detail and the 2 halfs click together.
This weekend I will put up a version with an open top and possible an open bottom with 1.4mm walls, but with room to put a transparent perspex sheet (5x8 cm) instead. So that will save a lot of material costs.
Home come the case is more expencive than the RPI itself ?
Because there are no cheap cases yet available.
Shapeways 3D printing costs a lot, its meant to print single pieces, and not order 1000 of them....
(and it is cheaper than the Pi....including vat and delivery...)
If you have a 3D printer, you can use the thingiverse design and print it for under 1 Euro of plastic costs...
But you need to have a 3d printer (and I don't have one) and it takes time to print one.
Probably within a month or so there will be cheap cases available...
The manufacturers probably also want to wait on a production model before they start making costs for molds....
I believe even in the feature the price will include a lowcost see through plastic case.
You just need to have patient...
Or you want it now...or you want to have a unique case...
The thingiverse design contains all sort of parameters which you can tailor to get an unique version...
That is why I put it up there, so people would have a base case design which they can alter.... generate stl files from it
and print it on a RepRap printer or sent it to shapeways (or someone else) to get it done.
You can also buy some perspex sheets (not expensive) and cut them yourself and glue them together...
Or you can purchase a small cheap plastic food container, cut some holes for cables, and use some form of padding to hold it place when when the lid is on?
yes of course...
Just look for creditcard boxes cases or whatever. you can use, I don't know how its called in english, sticky stuff they use for putting up posters, to hold the board.
Or you can use perspex sheets with distance holders with a 1.6 mm (thickness of the pcb) groove in it, to hold the board in place...
There was even someone who make a pdf which you could print, and with cutting and folding you would get a case
There were also some suggestions to ship the Pi in cardboard which you could transform to a simple case
That is the fun bit of having the first board...
Too bad I wasn't able to get one, I hope that I got on one of the 'interested' list (filled it in), but until now I didn't get any confirmation...
