Small monitor options for R-Pi

So, I know many people will want to hook the R-Pi up to a 50-inch HDTV, but some of us will want to keep it small (such as for a CarPC). I am not thinking about touchscreen capability, simply small LCD displays. So, there are $1000 5" to 8" LCDs meant for digital photography, but that is nuts. So, I found that small portable LCD TVs should be the way to go. The cheap Coby and Axion 7" LCD TVs have RCA/composite video input jack, and luckily the R-Pi also has an RCA/composite video output jack!  They are about $50 to $60.

Although I haven't yet received my RPi (it's supposed to arrive this week), I already bought a 7" lcd monitor on ebay that comes with hdmi and support of HD resolutions (native resolution is 840x480 I think). I think the direct signal from HDMI to a screen is much more preferred over a simple analog SD signal like the one you get from the RCA on the Pi.

Here's how it looks from a regular boot screen, it has very decent contrast:

The screen I'm using is a 7" Liliput screen found on ebay, you can buy it as a kit so you get it without the frame/plastic:

It's not very cheap, but the quality compared to a regular vga/composite screen is worth it in my opinion.

Interesting, from the picture it looks like the LCD is connected to a driver board, right?

Looking at that pic makes me really wish the DSI port on the Pi could be used for raw LCDs.  Then I think we could finally get high quality display at the lowest cost.  I was encouraged to hear Eben mention DSI in this interview at the Raspberry Jam user group meeting in Cambridge:

BTW, I've found the serial console is working out much better for me than the small composite LCD when I don't have a DVI/HDMI display handy and need to do tasks like configure networking on the Pi so I can SSH in.  I wrote a quick post on using the serial console yesterday.

Yes it uses a driver board.

Raw panels would be lot cheaper, if they could be driven directly from Rpi.

Great post on using the serial console.

    Anybody found cheaper hdmi display?
