1080p on 23 inch monitor but text is blurry

Dear raspberry pi gurus, recently I have just purchased a spanking new raspberry pi. I am tried to set the resolution to full hd which is 1080p 60 Hz. The config.txt that I had enabled was:

hdmi_drive = 2

hdmi_group = 1

hdmi_mode = 16 (1080p 60Hz)

hdmi_boost = 4

disable_overscan = 1

The monitor that I am using is 23 inch Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM. The pi is connected via HDMI to VGA converter (PI-VIEW) sold by element14. I have a steady 5V 1 amp PSU and I don't believe that the PSU is problematic.

I did the /opt/vc/bin/tvservice -s and it shows that my current resolution is 1920x1080, progressive. The only issue that I had is that the texts are blurry. Its kinda hard to read them, and is there any idea on how to make them sharp? I mean when I connect my PC via VGA mode, it still looks sharp on 1920x1080p. Please advice thank you

    Some adapters require specific settings to work correctly.  Check here for the settings of some of them.  I am not sure if yours is there but I am sure this is a good place to start.

    Since the monitor has DVI, it would likely work better with HDMI to DVI cable (does not matter if they call it DVI to HDMI).  No "converter" is needed for that because the digital video signal for HDMI and DVI is the same (VGA is analog which is why it needs digital to analog converter).

    Are you trying to view text in a CLI (command-line interface) or in a TUI (text-user interface) within a GUI (graphical-user interface)?

    I have a China-made Xenon 22-inch HDTV. Text in a TUI within a GUI is blurry unless I stand in front of it (using Arch Linux ARM). Text in the CLI, full HD screen, show OK but only at the highest resolution of my HDTV.

    If you're trying to view text in a terminal box within a GUI, try adding some TTFs (truetype fonts). I recommend installing and using ttf-mscorefonts-installer because you can set your terminal fonts to something easier to read. For example, you can change the fonts of the terminal to your own tastes, and then, the text is readable.

    You may be using raster fonts instead of truetype fonts. Hopefully, this helps you out. :-)

    Check the monitor settings for something like 'auto adjust' or 'pixel clock' & 'phase' (all from my Dell 2001FP, may be different on yours). Some combination of those might help, but take a note of existing settings as you may have to change them back when you connect it back to the PC using VGA.

    LCD displays and analogue VGA connectors don't really go well together, use DVI if at all possible.

    There's some test pages and instructions for setting up LCD's and VGA connections here http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/ if you follow through  the pages there's a load of explanations of the issues.

    Win ! image

    Not sure what it is about HDMI, but for every board / receiver / gadget I have, using an HDMI-DVI adapter into a DVI port reduces the hassle / breakage of one kind or another versus using an HDMI port directly.  My monitors are Dell too (the awesome 24" Dell 2408), which may or may not have a bearing on it.  As a result, I try to avoid plugging anything into the HDMI port except when it's the only way of getting audio out.

    Anyway, after telling the HDMI port to take a hike on most boards, all is happiness and light. image
