Root password for Debian Linux

Debian Linux Raspberry Pi system. Need to get password for root. "sudo" works for some things but can't do a "chdir" to look at /etc and other directories. Tried guessing the root password but haven't hit on it yet. I realize that they made the root password hard to find, but I need it for some things.

By default there isn't a root password as such. While you could set one, I'd recommend that you don't.

If you want to execute a series of privileged commands and are more comfortable being logged in as root, try "sudo -i".

I use "sudo bash". That changes the user to root for as many commands as you want to enter until you enter "exit". Simples !!

having downloaded Midnight Commander thus
sudo apt-get mc
I then start it using
sudo mc
to get a two panel file manager and shell
that does most everything i want.

just my £0.02 worth.
