Raspberry pi powersupply change from micro usb to dc power plug

Hi!

As topic suggests I want to change the powerconnection from the flimsy micro usb to a sturdy dc power plug.

Is this doable?

I was thinking something in the line of DC kontakt 2,5 mm chassi > DC-kontakter | Kjell.com

Thanks in advance

Not on the board since you have no provision for it there.

You could however have make a micro USB to DC socket fly lead to do this.

Easiest way to do this would be to get a micro USB lead cut off the unused end and solder the power connections on to the DC socket.

Personally I wouldn't bother unless you have a specific reason the micro USB is pretty tough after all it's what phones use every day for years on end!

Could a small board be made that plugs onto the GPIO header and provides power to the 5v pins on there?

    Thanks for the fast reply.
The reason i want to change the connector is that i'm planning on building the pi into an old genesis/mega drive. And i'm afraid that moving the console will break the power supply.

Also it looks more authentic =)

I have built a small buck power supply (using LM2596) that can take input voltages (through a DC connector like in here DC kontakt 2,5 mm chassi > DC-kontakter | Kjell.com) from 4V up to 40V.

The PSU is built onto a small PCB which is mounted on a couple of plastic risers (~1.5cm in height) tight with screws on the 2 mounting holes of the RPI.

Since this PSU can supply 5V and 3A, all the power supply issues that used to appear when using a phone charger as a PSU (5V/700mA) and USB hot-plug have disappeared.

Now, I can plug into the USB even external 2.5" hard-drives with no danger of a brown-out reset of the RPI. For me, this solution works best.

    Hi Paul,

Yes that is possible, it worked for me. However,I only tried on a RPI B model (and I don't know which one, they had all that trouble with polyfuses etc a while back and had another 'B' revision) and things may have changed again for the B+. I think it should be feasible, but I'm just not sure.

I might investigate the feasibility of designing one with a 7805 regulator etc.

I do share Robins concerns over durability of the Micro-USB connector I would expect the 26/40-Pin header to withstand slightly more abuse..
