Problem with Pi Desktop Case

I didn't check the entire video, but at the start (when the HDMI output is not available) it can be seen that the red light on the Pi is on, so it is getting power.

This means one of these possibilities could exist (there may be more, but this should cover most of the possibilities):

(a) The Pi has power, but insufficient power for some reason -> confirm you are using the official power supply, or

(b) The Pi is deliberately being kept in a reset state -> connect up USB-UART device to the 40-way connector and see from the serial console output if the Pi boots up, or

(c) The Pi has tried to boot, but failed for some reason -> connect up a USB-UART device to the 40-way connector and see from the serial console output how far the Pi got before a failure message occurs

For (a), I couldn't immediately see from the video what power supply you are using. Could you let me know the model number/link to it? For fully debugging (a), you should consider removing the attached SSD and any other peripherals, to reduce the current consumption. You could also consider trying to measure the voltage at the Pi (the 5V and GND connections are on the 40-way connector, you'll need a multi-meter for this measurement).

Anyway, that's how I would debug it. Without doing this, it is like flying blind. Some visibility is needed.

Without SSD the same effect. Multimeter show 5V.

This with the USB-UART will take a little time until I have the things together.

I have to disappoint you unfortunately: If I turn on the Raspberry Pi (after separation from the current) comes synonymous serially no output. First when I eject the SD card and plug again, the Raspberry Pi starts. However, I have found during experimenting that it is possible to install the Raspberry with a supply via the GPIO pins into the housing. But this is not a real solution either.

That's interesting. So, it means that the Pi is either deliberately held in reset or has no power, or (perhaps) it is trying to boot from a different source. I don't have the Pi Desktop nor tried to boot from a different source, so I don't know if any console output is to be expected prior to boot from alternate source.

Just to confirm, you're using a Pi 3, right? And do you have a disk/SSD connected? What happens if you don't have the disk drive/SSD connected? Does it then always power up correctly, or still have to remove micro SD after power-off?

Yes, I use a Raspberry 3. The behavior is independent of the SSD disk.

I had exactly the same problems and solved this by updating the PiDesktop package:

Download de PiDesktop package (https://github.com/pi-desktop/deb-make/releases )

# Remove the old package first

$ sudo dpkg -r pidesktop-base

# Then install the new one

$ sudo dpkg -i pidesktop-base-1.1.0.deb

Thanks for the hint. I can not tell the difference between a system with installed PiDesktop package and without.

Hi everybody,

just made an account because i have the same troubles as described here before.

I bought the PiDesktop as well. Had to remove the pi computer out of the PiDesktop twice now. And still only working after taking out the SD-Card before 2nd boot attempt.

When i transfered the system to the SSD and did a reboot there was no problem at all. But now i am stuck with the SD-Card. Take it out - put it in.

Any solutions? I'm having the same problem! I bought just for the fancy case as the msata it's a terrible solution, i was expecting to connect a simple HD or SSD inside. But, I can't even use just the case because the power connection needs the ellement 14 board. and if I use it the video doesn't work.
