I moved over 1000 miles from it, unfortunately. Fortunately, I have a buddy that is close and can buy and ship to me cheaper than the element 14 'personal' partner does.

No full schematic is publicly available (it is not open source). But yes, you can directly connect 5V DC to the 40-way connector if you wish to.

I read about this issue elsewhere (can't remember) and it has to do with USB hubs and also loss of data at high speeds. My son has a Rasp Pi 2 and I will need to connect a USB hub soon. Let me know if you find a solution.

The hubs and drives work fine with my raspberry pi 1, which is also USB 2.0, so I don't think that can be the issue.

Oh! I came across this as a possible issue between USB 3.0 and 2.0 with Via chips :http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/via-labs-usb-3-0-hub-will-not-recognize-a-usb-3-0-device-873399/

I believe your drives are 3.0 beacuse of the match of Pid from http://usb3speed.nirsoft.net/?pdesc=WD+Elements+10B8+USB+Device&vname=Western+Digital+Technologies%2C+Inc.&vid=4184&pid=4280

The raspberry Pi are USB 2.0 only and maybe iffy with newer 3.0.

    Just saw,

    Clem

My brand new raspberry pi 2 has defective USB ports.  I have a brand new USB hub which is independently powered and connected to 2 USB hard drives. When I plug it into the pi and boot it up, the drives are not recognized - no entries in /dev, nothing in dmesg.  When I unplug it dmesg indicates they were recognized then recognizes they were disconnected.

I bought another raspberry pi 2, same exact behavior.  I tried a different USB hub with different drives, same exact behavior.  It sees there is a systematic manufacturing defect in the USB ports.  For more details:

    David,

One more thing, it was not about price fixing.

    Thanks

Yes, change all instances of 'Business' with 'Reseller' on the links to that path of purchase.
Suggestion 2, a bonus:  Get a better partner than MCM for your direct ship.  I suggest Amazon /w Prime.  Of course, MCM is part of the MDD /w Farnell.  So, outsourcing that to Amazon primarily will cut your profit.
So, suggestion 3:  find a way to duplicate Amazon's amazingly cheap 'almost free shipping.... or keep suffering the bash for $15 on the first of a $35 product that fits in a $6 shipped box.

"We have an exclusive distribution arrangement with RS and Farnell." yadaydayda.

RPI doesn't make Pis. The design and have legal arrangement regarding the distribution (includes manufacture not mere retail) of it -- but ...  While they may be able to set a suggested manufacture price, and even partner with a manufacture to meet that goal; they cannot, in most but not all jurisdictions in the world. In the  UnitedStates, (IANAL), price fixing will get you a federal criminal prosecution, state prosecution, and civil liability --- and all that for just setting a price for downstream re-seller in violation of a ton of laws.

Price fixing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

..."International price fixing by private entities can be prosecuted under the antitrust laws of many countries." ...  "In the United States, agreements to fix, raise, lower, stabilize, or otherwise set a price are illegal per se.[11] It does not matter if the price agreed upon is reasonable or for a good or altruistic cause or if the agreement is unspoken and tacit. In the United States, price-fixing also includes agreements to hold prices the same, discount prices (even if based on financial need or income), set credit terms, agree on a price schedule or scale, adopt a common formula to figure prices, banning price advertising, or agreeing to adhere to prices that one announces."

As the designer RPi can license and have a manufacturer sell at at fixed MSRP in most countries.  (Experience having worked for companies that make things: Dell / MSFT).  As a Manufacturer - Element 14 is bound to set an MSRP but faces legal difficultly if they want to fix anything more than a suggested price.  I doubt you'll see a price on RaspberryPi.org but if you do, it will be an MSRP or some amount they set for only their own small store front stock.

Without doubt; Microcenter sells it for 35 USD in person.  They acquire it from Element 14 who is the sole manufacturer serving the US:  Raspberry Pi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.  So, my educated guess is that they are getting it cheap enough to merit stocking and selling it that that price.  They, will not sell online until the rush is over (speculative based upon my experience with this fine company).  When they do, they will charge their customary shipping.

The only poor thing RPi has done here is not convince better retailers, like Amazon, to directly order large quantities in advance of the 'go' date.
