Introduction
I'm participating in the Hackster.io Edge Computing with Xilinx Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit Challenge. My application The Kitchen ML Lifeguard was selected for the free hardware.
I will be publishing on this channel my experiences with the kit as a future reference for me and for those who may need it.
In this first post I describe the first steps to install the petalinux operating system on the Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit and the Smart Camera accelerated application firmware.
Glossary
SOM Board: System on Board Module. Is a board-level circuit that integrates a system function in a single module.
PetaLinux: PetaLinux is an embedded Linux development solution for Xilinx Zynq chips as well as for MicroBlaze designs. It is the default build system provided by Xilinx for its SoC platforms. PetaLinux provides a set of scripts that run on top of the Yocto Project embedded Linux build system. PetaLinux provides a complete, reference Linux distribution for Xilinx devices, included packages: Boot loader, CPU-optimized kernel, Linux applications & libraries, C & C++ application development, Debug, Thread and FPU support and Integrated web server for easy remote management of network and firmware configurations. https://www.xilinx.com/products/design-tools/embedded-software/petalinux-sdk.html
Yocto Project: The Yocto Project (YP) is an open source collaboration project that helps developers create custom Linux-based systems regardless of the hardware architecture. https://www.yoctoproject.org/
QSPI: A Queued Serial Peripheral Interface (QSPI; see also Quad SPI) is a type of SPI controller that uses a data queue to transfer data across the SPI bus.
Pmod is the Digilent defined standard of Peripheral Modules, small I/O interface boards that offer an ideal way to extend the capabilities of programmable logic and microcontroller boards. They allow sensitive signal conditioning circuits and high-power drive circuits to be placed where they are most effective - near sensors and actuators. Pmods communicate with host boards using 6, 8 or 12-pin connectors that can carry multiple digital control signals, taking advantage of standard serial protocols such as SPI and I²C. https://digilent.com/reference/pmod/start
IAS: ON Semiconductor Imager Access System (IAS) module definition standard.
FSBL: First-stage boot-loader firmware
PMU: Platform management unit firmware
ATF: Arm® trusted firmware
U-Boot: Second-stage boot loader. Provides the functionality for the hand-off between the primary boot device and the secondary boot device. It will search for both the SD card and eMMC secondary boot devices; if both are detected it will provide a menu interface to you to select the desired Linux boot target.
eMMC: eMMC stands for Embedded Multi-Media Card and It is an advanced managed NAND flash storage that is soldered directly to the motherboard or the device.
Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit
The Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit is an evaluation platform for the K26 SOM focused on machine learning (ML) acceleration in vision applications. The Xilinx® Kria KV260 Vision AI Starter Kit is comprised of a non-production version of the K26 system-on-module (SOM), carrier card, and thermal solution. The KV260 uses a Zynq® UltraScale+ MPSoC.
The Getting Starter Kit: https://www.xilinx.com/products/som/kria/kv260-vision-starter-kit/kv260-getting-started/getting-started.html
In addition to the starter kit you will need:
- Barrel Jack Power supply (12V, 3A)
- MicroSD card [16GB UHS-1]
- Micro-USB to USB-A cable
- AR1335 IAS camera module
- Ethernet cable
- HDMI cable to connect to a monitor
Xilinx sells a Basic Accessory Pack that has all the items: https://www.xilinx.com/products/som/kria/kv260-vision-starter-kit.html
Petalinux 2021.1
For this first review I will use Petalinux 2021.1 to explore the accelerated Applications. The accelerated applications will allow developers to customize their designs at the software level without requiring FPGA programming experience. Only common edge vision applications are available today.
The starter kit has a primary and a secondary boot device. The boot firmware is isolated from the application and the runtime OS. Developed applications run on the secondary boot device without having to touch the boot firmware. The main boot device is a QSPI memory located on the SOM, it is already pre-programmed (pre-loaded QSPI image) from the factory. The secondary boot device is a microSD card interface on the carrier card.
The primary boot device provides a redundant copy of boot firmware arranged in an A/B configuration. The A/B configuration provides a dynamic primary and secondary image operation with corresponding update mechanisms. On boot, the system automatically boots from the defined primary image, and, if boot fails, it falls back to the previously known good boot image. https://www.xilinx.com/support/documentation/user_guides/som/1_0/ug1089-kv260-starter-kit.pdf
Setting up the SD Card Image (PetaLinux)
First download the latest SD card image: https://www.xilinx.com/member/forms/download/xef.html?filename=petalinux-sdimage-2021.1-update1.wic.xz
and flash onto a microSD card. I used Balena Etcher for Windows: https://www.balena.io/etcher/
Then connect everything:
- The microSD card containing the boot image in the microSD card slot (J11) on the Starter Kit
- Get your USB-A to micro-B cable* Do not connect the USB-A end to your computer yet. Connect the micro-B end to J4 on the Starter Kit.
- Connect the IAS Camera Module to J7
- Connect to a monitor/display with the help of a DisplayPort/HDMI cable
- Grab the Power Supply and connect it to the DC Jack (J12) on the Starter Kit. Do not insert the other end to the AC plug yet.
I also connected the ethernet cable to my internet router with DHCP enabled.
I don't have an HDMI monitor available so I'm using an hdmi to usb video capture adapter with my Microsoft Surface Studio and using OBS Studio for video recording
Booting the Starter Kit
Use the Device Manager to observe which COM ports appear when you plug the USB cable attached to the KV260 Starter Kit into your computer.
If the board is not detected install the drivers from https://ftdichip.com/drivers/vcp-drivers/
You need a console program for the first steps. I used Putty: https://www.puttygen.com/download-putty
Open the serial session and insert the AC plug now.
This is the output:

Accelerated video:
The Starter Kit should boot in SD boot mode, and boot into Linux. At initial log-in, the platform requires you to set a password. When the system boots to Linux and asks for a login username, enter default username as “petalinux” and set a new user password.
To enable the root user, use the command below because “petalinux” has limited privileges. Enter the same password that you created for “petalinux” in the above step.
sudo su -l root
Verify Internet connectivity via “ping” or “DNS lookup.”
ping 8.8.8.8
Load Smart Camera accelerated application firmware
Prior to executing the newly installed application available at /opt/xilinx/bin, the FPGA firmware (PL bitstream + device tree overlay + PL drivers) needs to be loaded using xmutil utility commands.
Follow the below steps to load Smart Camera accelerated application firmware on the Vision AI Starter Kit.
1) Run the below command to list the existing application firmware available on the Vision AI Starter Kit.
sudo xmutil listapps
2) Run the below command to unload default “kv260-dp” application firmware.
sudo xmutil unloadapp
3) Run the below command to load Smart Camera accelerated application firmware.
sudo xmutil loadapp kv260-smartcam
Run the Smart Camera accelerated application.
To run the accelerated app with the IAS camera module, use the following command:
sudo smartcam --mipi -W 1920 -H 1080 -r 30 --target dp
This is all for now!
