Recommend a beginners FPGA development kit

Catwell
Catwell over 15 years ago

An engineering friend of mine could really benefit from learning more about FPGAs. I suggested getting a simple devkit to get some hands on experience programming and designing with them. When he asked what to get, I will admit, I was at a loss.

So, if anyone can recommend something that would be great.

Thanks ahead of time.

There are virtually tons of inexpensive development boards out there. Xilinx has a $49 Spartan 3 board, for example.  Development software is free, and the boards come with demo programs. If you just go to the FPGA manufacturer sites(Xilinx, Altera, Lattice) you'll find them.  The distributors (Avnet, Arrow, etc.) also have some of their own development boards.  You probably want to get a kit that comes with a download cable, or you're going to have to go buy one.

    Barry,

    Thank you for the reply.

The Spartan 3   boards are a little more thant $50 dollars from what I found. XILINX   - HW-SPAR3AN-SK-UNI-G

This one looks like a good   starter kit, what do you think? XILINX   - SK-CRII-L-G - CoolRunner-II CPLD Starter Kit

A CPLD is different from an FPGA.

    Which does your friend need?

What are the requirements and constraints? Is it just low-cost education, or do they have a project in mind?

Consider checking out the BeMicro [$49] (http://www.altera.com/b/nios-bemicro-evaluation-kit.html) or the BeMicro-SDK [$79] (http://www.altera.com/b/bemicro-sdk.html) from Altera.

    Cabe,

That looks perfect. (I don’t know where I got the $49, maybe I was thinking of a discontinued board).  Also, if you look at Digilent (digilentinc.com) they have a simple board for $79.  I don’t know anything about it, but it looks like a pretty simple, inexpensive option.

    Gbulmeruk,

My friend needs an FPGA board for sure.

The main thing they want learn about is industrial automation, fire protection, and control systems. And more of the products he works with incorporated FPGAs. I'm just trying to give him a leg up.

A friend is designing a low-cost FPGA board (under $50), but delivery time is flexible :-)

In the meantime, have a look at:

    http://www.gadgetfactory.net/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1&zenid=8a1053198bdea604892753b1d375e28a

at the Butterfly One (Papilio One)

One of the interesting parts is they have implemented an Arduino in an FPGA!

    Gbulmeruk,http://us.element-14.com/xilinx/sk-crii-l-g/coolrunner-ii-cpld-starter-kit/dp/19P1156

The XILINX   - SK-CRII-L-G - CoolRunner-II  CPLD Starter Kit acts as a general purpose FPGA. Do you think this will be ok?

Also, the Butterfly One is plan "b".

Personally, I'd go for an FPGA vs. a CPLD.  The CPLD just doesn't have a lot of resources-256 macrocells(registers) as compared to the XC3S250 in the Butterfly which has THOUSANDS of registers, multipliers and all sorts of other goodies.  You can always put a simple project into a big FPGA, you can't put a big project in an itty, bitty CPLD.

Cabe - as I wrote, CPLD and FPGA are rather different animals. If your friend sees increasing numbers of FPGA-based products, and not CPLD, get FPGA.

FPGA provides for MUCH more complex projects than a CPLD. An FPGA capable of emulating an entire processor is under $20.

A key is the toolchain. Check each vendor to make sure you/your friend likes the tool chain. My FPGA-guru says in his opinion Lattice just ruined there's.

I'd go for the Butterfly in preference to a CPLD, but I don't own one, and don't know anyone who has used it.

Message was edited by: G Bulmer PS - If your friend can wait a week or two, my FPGA guru aims to post one his CPLD PCB's as Open Source.
