Need help with some measurements.

jw0752
jw0752 over 6 years ago

I need some help collecting data about Oscilloscope Probes. I am thinking of making some low frequency Non-Slip probe tip adapters for Oscilloscope probes. With the limited number of Oscilloscope probes with in my reach it does not look like there is any standardization.

As you can see the two probes that I own each have different diameter probe tips. It would help me plan my project if I could find out what the diameter and length of oscilloscope probes from as many of you as possible. Please measure length of the consistent diameter of the tip and also the diameter itself. I can accept measurement in inches or millimeters. Here is what I hope to be able to build without having to custom make each one.

Your help would be appreciated.

    Not a problem, you must be amassing the greatest data survey of oscilloscope probes ever undertaken. I took the photo using my mobile phone camera whilst using an eyeglass/loupe.

    Hi John.

    Sorry for the delay on this, I took a look at the probes here, and I wasn't sure what level of detail you needed, so sketched this up, so that we're using the same terminology (I took Doug's naming convention : ):

    image

    For the three probes I have, these are the measurements:

    Tektronix TPP0200TPP0200:

    PD1 = 0.73mm

    PD2 = 1.12mm

    GD = 3.80mm

    BD = 4.93mm

    PL1 = 4.0mm approx

    PL2 = 4.5mm approx

    PL3 = 0.5mm approx

    PGL = 4.5mm approx

    GL = 3.0mm approx

    BL = 20.8mm approx

    Tektronix TPP1000TPP1000:

    PD1 = PD2 = 0.65mm

    GD = 3.85mm

    BD = 4.95mm

    PL1 = 2.0mm approx

    PL2 = 3.5mm approx

    PL3 = 2mm approx

    PGL = 5.0mm approx

    GL = 3.0mm approx

    BL = 14.5mm approx

    Picoscope TA375:

    PD1 = 0.91mm

    PD2 = 1.34mm

    GD = 4.82mm

    BD = 6.20mm

    PL1 = 5.0mm approx

    PL2 = 6.0mm approx

    PL3 = 0.00mm

    PGL = 5.0mm approx

    GL = 3.6mm approx

    BL = 26.0mm approx

    Hi Shabaz,

    Can I say Wow!  That is a really nice collection of data. Thank you for all the time you put into helping me.

    Hi John

    I'd like to help, but all my probes are the spring loaded "hooky" type. I'm afraid if I want to probe a socket, I usually poke a patch lead in and then hook on to the other end of the patch.

    Wow - why didn't I think of that!!!!!!! image

    I have 3 probes - all appear to be made by RS Components

    All 2 are similar, 3rd quite different

    All measurements in mm

    Pin Diameter          1.4     1.4     0.7

    Pin Length              4.8     3.8     3.8

    Ground Dia             7.6     6.5     4.8

    Hi Neil,

    Thanks for taking the time to get the measurements for me. It is amazing that in a little over a week I have amassed data on probe tip sizes from all over the world.
